Daniel Custer Obituary

A kind and gentle heart stopped beating on October 6, 2010. Daniel Carter Custer Jr. was born in Ardmore, Oklahoma on October 13, 1924 to the late, Hazel and Daniel Carter Custer Sr. During the great depression he moved with his family to Cushing, Oklahoma, where his father worked at the gas refinery. At the age of 19 he joined the Navy and was proud to serve his country as a Navy Seabee. On June 6, 1944, he made the landing on Omaha Beach. After leaving the Navy he moved to Colorado Springs to work for his Navy Seabee Commander, Doug Jandine in the sheet metal trade. In his 37 year career he also worked for Heyse Sheet Metal. Dan was a proud member of the Sheet Metal Union #9 for 60 years. There were few things he could not build. Dan was married to Maxine Custer for 53 years, she preceded him in death. Dan was totally devoted to his family and friends. He was known to many as Grandpa. He leaves to cherish his memory, his son Gary (Susan), a grandson, Justin (Paige), a sister, Billye Young and two precious great grandchildren, Braden and Grace and many extended family members and friends. He was also preceded in death by his constant, faithful companion of 10 years, his dog, Hunter. Graveside services will be at 11:30 AM on Monday, October 11, 2010 at Crystal Valley Cemetery in Manitou Springs, followed by a celebration of his life at his son's home. The family offers a special thank you to Pikes Peak Hospice for their guidance, care and support. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Grandpa we love you. The family requests that memorial donations be made to Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation 825 E. Pike Peak Ave. Suite 600 Colorado Springs, Colorado 80903-3624

Not sure what to say?

October 13, 2010

To all who knew and loved Dan -- I was just signing on to say, practically exactly, what Anne Warren has already written. Dan and Hunter were among the very best parts of many of my early mornings at the Dog Park. What a wonderful person he was. I am so sorry for your loss.

To Dan's Family,

Dan was the sweetest man at the Dog Park. We walked at the same time, early in the morning, for years--Hunter was a faithful, dignified companion and even let me pet him from time to time. Dan used to keep me up to date on his other walking companion, Virgil, who became ill a few years back. I missed Dan when he became noticeably absent during my morning walks, and I feared the worst for Hunter. Unfortunately I didn't know how to get in touch with him, and hoped that one day he would appear again. He was missed then, and is still missed today. He was the kindest man, and was so considerate when my own dad became ill. I know he will be incredibly missed by his family and friends, just knowing how sweet he was to a stranger like me and my dogs.
