Daniel Fenaughty Obituary

Fabulous father, faithful friend and fierce defier of odds, Dan died on February 20 in Kingston, Rhode Island. He was with his family there, recovering from a series of strokes, and planning a return to Colorado Springs. His children, Alexander, 26 and Katherine, 24, were counting the days.

Dan was born January 13, 1962, in West Islip, New York. He graduated from Ohio University with a degree in communications, then worked for ABC News, New York. Wheedled into moving to Colorado by then-wife Ann, he ditched broadcast and went to law school, graduating from CU and passing the bar with flying colors in 1996.

In 1997, Dan had a life-changing fall, 1000-feet down Pikes Peak while on a short trip checking snow conditions. His injuries were massive. The prognosis: Dan would never dress himself again. That was before he danced with his daughter at the Debutante Ball, opened a law practice and drove his Miata on a race track.

Dan loved Alex & Katie beyond the moon and stars. With them, he enjoyed the band Grass It Up, Front Range Barbecue and his Miata.

A veteran producer of national political conventions, he was so disgusted by the current race, this could be viewed as his final protest.

Being colorblind, Dan might skip flowers. He would surely be pleased if you are inclined to help the kids work through his estate. Help is not always money. Time, advice and a good story go a long way. If you want to make a monetary donation, the address will be: Dan Fenaughty Fund, Ent Credit Union, PO Box 15819, CS 80935.

There will be a celebration of life for Dan at Front Range Barbecue, Saturday, February 27, 6:30 pm. Please come celebrate with us and him.

I'll never forget the summer Dan, Beth and I spent at the DA's office as law school students. I also remember how we each grew into young lawyers finding our own unique way into the practice of law. Dan had the kind of spirit that when you met him you instantly knew he was a great and caring soul. As Pat said, he will be missed.

My memories are at the Pueblo reservoir on our boats with Richard Randell and Ann in the early 1990's. I ran into Dan a few more times after his accident in Cub foods and was happily surprised he remembered my name. The last time I saw him was at the courthouse and he would always say Hi with a smile. Dan always seemed to have a passion for life.

Dan I always thought the world of you and I have always been extremely fond of you. I will truly miss you as you were kind, passionate and smart. I will also miss working cases with you. Appellate work is hard but I always knew you would give 100% for our client. Dan Kay
