Daniel Kautzman Obituary

Daniel F. Kautzman, devoted husband and father, passed away Wednesday, July 22, 2009 in Colorado Springs. A resident of Colorado Springs since 2003, Dan devoted most of his 39 year career in education to Summit High School, Summit, NJ where he was music teacher, chairman of the music department and administrator. He also gained prominence in New Jersey as conductor of All-State Chorus and Central Region Orchestra. Dan enjoyed travel, music and reading. Ever intellectually curious, he always had at least one research project going that involved studying maps, history, biographies, literature, and/or musical scores. He was an excellent photographer and left many beautiful photographs for his family to enjoy. Dan was delighted by the quantity and quality of classical music concerts available locally, especially the Colorado Springs Philharmonic and the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs. The excellent public library system in Colorado Springs was a constant resource for Dan's study. He loved the view of the mountains from his desk in Colorado Springs and enjoyed taking walks in the mountain air. Dan is survived by his wife of 69 years, Dorothy D. Kautzman; daughters Joan (husband Don) Larrabee and Barbara (husband Hal Prentice) Kautzman; grandsons Jon (wife Stacey) Perlet and Daniel Perlet; and great grandsons, Owen and Keegan Perlet. A private family service is planned. The family requests that any memorial contributions go to The Colorado Springs Philharmonic, PO Box 1266, CS, CO 80901, or The Chamber Orchestra of the Springs, PO Box 7911, CS, CO 80903.

Dear Joan and family,
Dan (and you) were so much a part of my growing up years. From my earliest memories of string quartet music emanating from our living room on many an evening as I went to sleep upstairs, to Music Nights at Silver Bay, to operettas and chorus at Summit High School, he was always there - kind, patient, and occasionally amazed, like the time I made the National Chorus.
Your names were household words as I grew up and I know my parents (Larney and Vera Meacham) missed you both a great deal when we moved to the Seattle area.
Dan will always live in my heart.

With blessings and all good wishes,
Carol Meacham Scace

Dear Barbara and family,

My parents and I send to you my deepest sympathies on the loss of your dad.

With the passing of a loved one, it is difficult to not to dwell on the sad moment, but always remember the good times. This will remain with you forever as your soul and heart heal from the loss.

Take care,

Sue Jacobs

Dear Joan and Family-
My deepest sympathy on the loss of your father. What a wonderful man he was...I aspire to be half as vital as he was at his age. The beautiful thing is that you are fortunate to have such wonderful and deep memories to sustain you. Blessings to all...
