On the morning of October 23, 2018, Daphane Evette Mitchell Smith left this earth to rest eternally, at age 57. She was born to John and Kathleen (Chatman) Mitchell in Washington, D.C. on October 4, 1961. After graduating from Parkdale High School in 1979, Daphane would go on to study at Bluefield College, graduating with an Associate's degree in 1981. She went on to work at Kirkland & Ellis Law Firm until 1985, being highly praised.
Daphane would later marry Howard Wallace Smith, III in April of 1985. They traveled to and lived in many states and countries as part of Howard's service in the U.S. Army, including Germany where their first child Howard Wallace Smith IV was born. Their second son, Bryan would later be born in Killeen, Texas.
After living overseas the family would eventually move back to the States and end up settling in Colorado Springs in 1996, a place that Daphane loved and would live out the rest of her life. In 1997, Daphane started a career as the Library Technician for Giberson Elementary school, a position she would hold proudly for 21 years until her untimely passing.
When Howard and Daphane divorced in 2000, she decided to stay in Colorado Springs to raise her two sons, instead of moving back to the East Coast. She loved the atmosphere in Colorado and the people of Colorado Springs loved her just as much. In the two decades she lived in the city, she touched many hearts and minds, inspiring both children and adults around her to be better people through her work as Giberson's Library Technician.
Even after work she would support her students by attending their sports games and other extra-curricular events diligently; lending her iconic voice to cheer everyone on. Never embarrassed and exuding confidence, she was a role model for the neighborhood and school district. 'Ms. Smith', Swan of Colorado Springs, will truly be missed.
