Tom passed away peacefully at the Evergreen Nursing Home in Alamosa, Colorado on October 12, 2023. His wife of 64 years, Doris, his "Cupcake," also of Alamosa, passed away peacefully at the La Jara Hospital on May 8, 2024. On July 4th, they would have celebrated their 65th anniversary.
Tom was born on December 8, 1937, in Millerstown, Kentucky. He proudly served his country for over 25 years in the United States Army before he was honorably discharged in 1979. After his military career he joined the Schlage Lock family until he retired in 1999, after which he went to work for Fountain School System and again retired.
Doris was born on May 19, 1941, in Anneta, Kentucky. She was an entrepreneur and business owner and an active member of her community in the Widefield and Fountain areas of Colorado. Eventually, she was employed by the City of Fountain and served as the City Clerk for 35 years. Following retirement, the couple relocated to Walsenburg in 2011, where they owned and operated a successful antique and collectibles shop known as "The Green Elephant" until 2020.
Doris also served on the Navajo Ranch Water Board for numerous years.
Tom and Doris were preceded in death by Tom's parents, Omer Darrell Fulkerson and Alta Mae Miller and Doris' parents, Earnest Meredith and Bertha Mae Logsdon, as well as by their two sons, David Thomas and Darren Matthew, who tragically died in an automobile accident in 1974. Tom was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Connie and Junior Meredith, and brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Rosetta Fulkerson.
Tom and Doris are survived by her brother David and his wife, Carol "Sam" Meredith of Williamsburg, VA, and her sisters, Brenda Parker of Frankfort, KY, and Alice Barlow, of Gainesboro, TN, and multiple nephews and nieces. Patricia "Trish" and Jason Kelly and their children and Robyn and Jeremy James, with love and devotion, referred to Tom and Doris as Mom and Dad and "Grandma Doris" and "Papa Tom," and were equally cherished as Doris and Tom's family. Also surviving is their pet corgi, "Pebbles", whom they loved and cherished for many years.
Tom and Doris were well known and well-recognized in Widefield, Fountain and Walsenburg for their outgoing personalities, community involvement and benevolence. Doris was instrumental in assisting several Vietnamese immigrants in completing their citizenship requirements and aiding their relatives in Vietnam in coming to America. They also served as surrogate parents and grandparents, friends, and benefactors to many of those in need, both young and old.
