David Bourgault, loving husband and father, passed away January 2, 2023, in Colorado Springs, surrounded by family and friends after a hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on August 3, 1960, in Swindon, England, he was the son of Bertrand "Frenchie" and Mary (Jessop) Bourgault. Upon moving from England to the United States, the family ultimately settled in Colorado Springs in 1965. The Bourgault family was lucky to grow up in a close-knit neighborhood filled with love, and just enough good-hearted mischief to keep life interesting.
After graduating from Wasson High School in 1978, Dave attended Arizona State University and the University of Colorado at Boulder where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Architectural Engineering. He worked hard to put himself through college, working at the CU Recreation Center and Seven Falls, where he met the love of his life, Sondra Williams, in 1979.
Dave was blessed with both an engineering mind and a keen sense of leadership. He began his career at HCDA Engineering in 1984 as a design consultant and worked closely with architectural firms. He quickly became enamored with the application of these skills in a manufacturing environment and joined Stresscon Corporation in 1989 as a project manager.
Over his successful 34-year career at Stresscon, Dave also served as Chief Operating Officer, President, and Chief Executive Officer. He was instrumental in the creation of Stresscon's product design standards, operating philosophy and manufacturing processes for highly engineered precast concrete building elements used in commercial construction. Under Dave's leadership, Stresscon and Dave's team became recognized nationally as one of the most respected companies in the industry. He contributed to many technical associations in engineering, construction, and the concrete industry and received many recognition awards for technical and aesthetic achievements.
Dave's work ethic, business acumen, and leadership skills were impeccable. He was an innovative problem solver and mentor to both his employees and young engineers throughout the Colorado Springs community, providing insight toward achieving their professional growth.
Among his numerous projects, Dave's favorites included: the Yellowstone Club in Big Sky, Montana; Folsom Field additions at CU Boulder; Colorado State University Football Stadium;Broadmoor Hotel; and recently, the Pikes Peak Summit House. These projects presented complex challenges that Dave was uniquely qualified to resolve. Dave always worked from a place of integrity and innovation and had great pride in what he accomplished.
He was most proud, however, of his wonderful marriage of 35 years to his wife Sondra, and his "most important work" as a father to his beloved daughters Gaby and Maddy.
A lifelong athlete, Dave enjoyed sports ranging from gymnastics, to hiking, skiing, and mountain biking. He loved to ride the trails in Cheyenne Mountain State Park near his home. Dave passionately followed the CU Buffs' football and basketball teams, and was proud to be a 35-year football season ticket holder. He and his family could often be found cheering on the Buffs at Folsom Field.
Dave was generous, humble, and led by example in both his career and personal life. He was an excellent listener, had a fabulous, dry sense of humor and a quick, wry smile he was always ready to share. His optimism and zeal for life were unshakeable to the end.
Dave was predeceased by his parents, Mary and Frenchie, and will forever be remembered by his wife Sondra, daughters Gaby and Maddy, brothers Steve and Greg, sister Michelle, and his nieces and nephews Megan (Andrew) McFadden, Kara (Chris) Billingsley, David Bourgault, Aubrey (Jeff) Bourgault, Nick Bourgault, and Sarah Thornburg.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions be made to the David J. Bourgault Memorial Scholarship Fund at CU:
