David Bowerman Obituary

Dr. David Lee Bowerman, long-time resident of Colorado Springs, passed away peacefully in Houston, Texas on October 21, 2014 at the age of 86. David dedicated 40 years of service to the community of Colorado Springs.

Raised in Victor, NY, some of his fondest memories were of growing up on the family farm with his seven siblings. David became class president at Oberlin College and went on to pursue his medical degree at the University of Colorado. He proudly served his country as a med tech in the US Army while stationed at Ft. Carson. He completed his medical internship at Letterman Army Hospital and his residency at the University of Colorado Medical Center and General Rose Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Bowerman provided dynamic leadership to the El Paso County Coroner's Office, conducting forensic autopsies for 26 Colorado counties and forensic toxicology for 40 Colorado counties. He personally performed over 12,000 forensic autopsies and rendered expert pathology testimony for thousands of civil and criminal court cases. He was one of the longest serving coroners in the history of El Paso County and was responsible for making the Coroner's Office the first such office in Colorado to be accredited by the National Association of Medical Examiners.

David served as a diplomat to the American Board of Pathology/Anatomical and Clinical Pathology; a fellow to the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, American Society of Cytology and American Academy of Forensic Sciences and emeritus fellow to the College of American Pathologists and was President of the Colorado Society of Clinical Pathologists. He also served as Chief of Staff at St. Francis Hospital and was widely published in his field.

When he was not working, David spent time traveling, listening to music, reading, or practicing foreign languages. He had a brilliant mind, a sensitive spirit, and a quick wit. He will be deeply missed.

Having dealt with death as his profession, David requested that a funeral service not be held.

David is survived by his children, Kurt Bowerman (Susie), Lisa Hanson (Mark), Sue Campbell and Monica Urban (Benjamin); 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Dear Dr. Bowman's Family: Please accept our deepest sympathy on the death of Dr. Bowman. We knew him for many years and enjoyed all his funny stories, especially the one about the mountain cat menacing his dogs. We knew him to be a fine physician who served patients and the courts for many years. We will remember him with a smile. Drs. Robert and Marcella Fierro

I only have great memories of the best boss I ever had. He was always so kind and fun to be around. I will always remember when he and I travelled to Pueblo to testify on a DUI. I was on the stand for over 2 hours. By then it was almost 5 p.m. and they told Dr. B to come back the next day to do his testimony. He absolutely refused to travel there again the next day and after some stern words, the court allowed him to testify, keeping everyone overtime.
RIP my friend.

He will always remain in the hearts and minds of all of us who admired him. Dr. B may you rest in peace. You will be missed. Blessings to his family, Mrs. Rondi Robbins and family
