Diehl Family,

It is with a heavy heart and strong memories that I write to you after just learning of Dave's passing. Dave was one of the most positive, motivated, and truly sincere people that I have been lucky enough to have served with and call a friend. We forged a bond while deployed to Afghanistan that will never be forgotten. My heart aches for your family and I pray your grief will be softened through time.

Somehow I am just catching the news of David's passing. I am so confused by this and cannot understand how such an amazing person can be taken from us all. I went to elementary school with David and remember him and his sweet smile and quiet intelligence. I would get updates on him from my parents every now and then and always wanted to reach out to see how he was doing....how time slips away. I am honored to have known him. We are thinking of you all during this incredibly tough time. As much as we want to, we cannot make sense out of nonsense. David will be incredibly missed.

I worked with Dave a few times last year on base and was struck by his professionalism, humility, and character. I join with you in your grief and cling to the assurance and hope in our savior Jesus Christ. Neither life nor death can separate us from the love of God (Romans 8). I am so sorry to hear about David. Please accept my deepest sympathies. This is such a shock. Todd told me this morning. I remember David from playing Reds baseball with Todd and other sports. I also remember the great time David and Matt had attending the All Star game at Coors field with me. Words seem so inadequate at a time like this. Since I had heard this terrible news, I always had this wonderful barbecue evenings in mind which we had spended in my father's garden a few years ago. I cannot realize what happened. I will miss him and his smile so much. Today my thoughts and my heart are with you, Page, Luke and Juliet.

I am shocked! David had such a drive for life! He had to be the best at whatever was thrown in his path! Though we had gone our separate ways since Mullen I continued to follow your career in sports and in life through the expert investigative technique of "googling" you. You represent everything that is right with our country. You always have. You were a great teammate, friend and leader to those around you and we are all better off for having known you. My thoughts are with you and your family.

My memories of David are from Wilder Elementary, Southpark and Cougar baseball; I could never quite keep up with David on the ballfield no matter how hard I tried. My sympathies go out to the entire Diehl family. I never had the pleasure of meeting Nicole, Paige, Luke and Juliet, but I was lucky enough to stumble upon a video of Christmas wishes, a truly beautiful family. It looks like David excelled at everything he did beyond Cougar baseball. I am truly sorry for your loss.

I echo Luke Field's sentiments. I grew up with Dave, he was my quaterback, he handed the ball off to me many times, we won 2 super bowls together. Ran track together (more like I watched Dave win and I tagged behind). We played Tecmo Bowl together. Swam at the pol together. And we competed against each other in high school.

My heart aches for your loss. His life, as I knew it, was a life well lived.

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed growing up with David Diehl. He was an outstanding leader, a tremendous athlete and a genuine friend. We're so sorry. Dave was the AC on my first KC-10 deployment. He was a pleasure to fly and live with as we endured the 2006 holidays away from home. His abilities and constant calm showed me how it was supposed to be done. God bless you guys.
