David GENEEN Obituary

GENEEN, David Michael
For the last few years David showed tremendous bravery, strength and dignity as he tried all options to beat MDS (myelodysplastic syndrome). On Friday August 15, David passed away peacefully, after this long and determined struggle, surrounded by his loving family. David was born in Glasgow to the late Pearl and Dr. Ben Geneen on Valentine's Day, 1948. Ten years later he and his family moved to Toronto. At the age of 16, David started selling cars out of people's driveways. This passion for cars ultimately grew into a storied career in the luxury car business, culminating in Grand Touring Automobiles. When he wasn't at the wheel of an elegant car, he could be found washing and driving a fast boat on Lake Ontario at the IYC, in Miami, or on Lake Muskoka. His sense of style permeated his life. Beauty surrounded him wherever he went, from his wardrobe to his homes and wife Linda. He was a generous mentor and made a big difference in the lives of so many. He leaves his loving and devoted wife Linda Stromme, his supportive sister Lucy Waverman (Bruce MacDougall) and his much loved sons Daniel and Julian as well as their mother Florence Minz. Unkie will be dearly missed by his nieces Emma Waverman (Micah Kornberg) and Katie Dolgin, his nephew Alex MacDougall (Natalie Kauffman) and his great-nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his many friends and relatives with whom he's had a lasting impact. We will all miss his unconditional love, unfiltered thoughts and acerbic wit. His faithful canine companion Bennie will miss his affection. Our lives will be less colourful without him. At David's request, there will be no funeral. A Celebration of David's Life will be held at the Windsor Arms Hotel Thursday, August 21 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Family and friends are invited to attend. Donations may be made to "the David Geneen Fund for Stem Cell Transplant Research" c/o Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation (thepmcf.ca).

Here I am on September the 18th, 2024 just now having being alerted to the very sad and far too early departure of David. Having met David while we both worked at B.U.A. together we had a very memorable time together and as others have mentioned we somehow entwined our idiocies and silliness of young men at the time, late 1960s. One of our fun associates was one, David Bartlett fresh from Bournemouth, U.K. David Bartlett has also died as I think very unfairly because of a particular form of Cancer. Both Davids left deep and positive additions to my life which I shall never fir all good reasons forget them both. Now at 80 and on very excellent condition both physically and emotionally and living in Vancouver I admit to all readers how terribly sad I feel of David's passing and it is only now after ten whole years. Bless you David you unquestionably were one of the good fellows!

Over lunch today (July 6th 2021) and in a conversation with my wife i was recalling events of long ago (1967/68ish) of my BP & Fiat dealership that was on the south east corner of Eglinton and Bayview where David's name came up. Of interest, I Googled his name and sad to find out he is no longer with us. After school David would man the gas pumps almost for free just so long as he could work on his car in the shop. Other stories abound but not enough space for me to add them in to this tribute to a long ago friend/employee who (sadly) is no longer with u. Do get in touch

I met David in the early seventies. He was such a good friend to me. Have wonderful memories of driving fantastic cars because he didn't have a place to park them while trying to sell them on consignment. David had the best sense of humour...some of his quips still make me laugh today. Although I lost touch with David it was always reassuring to know that he went on to have a wonderful and successful life and was 'out there'. So glad that I had the opportunity to know him. My condolences to his family. I know how much you will miss him terribly.

David was an amazing man, I had the ultimate privilege of working for him from 1995-2002. I was always amazed how warm and kind he was to everyone. There will definitely be a void without him. RIP DG.

Daniel, Julian, Lucy, Linda and the whole family, please accept our sincere condolences.
We met David when we started cleaning "Grand Touring Automobiles" dealership on Dupont St. back in the mid 1990's (Ant Janitorial). David always had time to stop and talk to us. He always asked if there was anything he could do to help ease our cleaning job, especially in the winter time... When our daughter was getting married in July of 2005 he surprised us all by sending his own Rolls-Royce Phantom for the bride and the groom to be at their service on this important day in their life. THANK YOU DAVID.
We met a number of times on the street when David was coming for his treatment at The Princess Margaret Hospital... David You will be fondly remembered by us forever.
Thank you for being You. Rest in Peace.

David and I were best friends during our teenage years and had many an adventure together. Eventually, we went our own ways as friends often do. Whenever I was in Toronto I would visit him at Grand Touring, and we would have a great time reminiscing about old times.
My condolences to his family and to the other good friends he made over the years.

David was someone very special in so many different ways to so many different people. for me, I was just a young and naïve boy when David gave me that summer job, washing cars and keeping the lot in order. He was NO boss at all, it was like working for a good friend or a really cool second dad or uncle of some sort. My goal each day was to make everything perfect! for some strange reason I always wanted to impress David. He taught me what it meant to have pride. That summer job led to nearly a 10 year career at Grand Touring where I went from washing cars to managing sales. My early goals of always wanted to impress him never faded through-out my tenure. subsequently I ended my role at Grand Touring when he did as to me the days ahead would have been much different with the heart of the dealership and my good friend absent. Within my new career and David's new retirement we kept in touch. But our frequent conversations stayed the same. Whether it was while he was cruising in Florida or downtown treating me to lunch(he always treated BTW)I never quite felt that I had ever left him as an incumbent and he supported me within my new career as strongly as he did the first day I washed his cars 15 years prior! And of course, I continued with much effort to impress him,...like I always did...

The news of David's passing is heart wrenching and he will be missed dearly. To the Geneen family, I wish you all of G-D's blessings during this most difficult time.

It always struck me that David had the life he wanted. Style was very important and he expressed it through the dealership. We had a number of conversations over the last 30yrs, they were never ordinary. Its not possible to comfort family due to such a significant loss, but in whatever way it can come, I hope you receive it.

Best Wishes

In honor of David's origins, I sport a kilt today with a tartan plaid that can only be called Sad.
Although I haven't seen David in years, I keenly miss him, knowing that dinners and events in the past, when we joked and laughed together, can now no longer ever be repeated.
Carol joins me in sending sympathies to your whole family.
One can only hope that on David's new journey... he eventually comes across Pearl and Ben... and agrees to tag-team with his mother, Pearl... to keep Ben in check!
Or maybe it's the other way around....? He teams up with Ben to keep Pearl from opening another store!
Either way, we miss all their feisty Geneen spirit.
