David Lucero Obituary

David Lucero, 67, a resident of Colorado Springs and longtime Salida resident, passed away peacefully July 23, 2009. He was born August 15, 1941, in Leadville to Joe and Alice (Chavez) Lucero. Dave was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Colorado Springs and for many years St. Josephs in Salida. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, four-wheeling, watching sports, especially his Colorado Rockies. He also loved gambling and he enjoyed spending time with his beloved family. He worked at Climax for 23 years and retired from Colorado Springs School District 20 in 1997 after a rewarding career in the schools. Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Alice. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Sandra of Colorado Springs; sons Rodrick Lucero of Fort Collins, Dave (Caryn) Lucero of Colorado Springs, Scott Lucero of Denver; daughter, DD DeLeo (Art) of Colorado Springs; brothers Richard (Hortence), Ken (Lynn), Leonard (Pat), Ed (Sue), Steve (Marla), sisters Josie Archuleta and Elaine (Chuck) Tanner. Grandchildren include, Rossi DeLeo, Erica Lucero, Erin Lucero, and Emma Lucero and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and godchildren. Rosary and Celebration of Life are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Monday, July 27, 2009, at Mountain View Mortuary, 2350 Montebello Square Dr., Colorado Springs, CO. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., July 28, 2009, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Salida, Colorado. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Salida. Everyone is invited to join the family at St. Joseph's community center afterwards for a reception. Friends may make memorial contributions to Sons of Salida Scholarship Fund, c/o Dave Lucero Jr., at 2696 Emerald Ridge Drive, Colorado Springs, CO, 80920. The family would like to thank the entire staff at St. Francis Medical Center for their kind and thoughtful care, specifically Bridget, Steve, and Jodie.

We will always remember Dave's color commentary at the family horseshoe tournaments in Santa Fe. His passion for fun family events, holiday celebrations, and birthdays will hold a special place in our hearts. We will miss you, Tio Dave!

He was the best man, husband, friend, father and all around superstar that anyone could have known. We are all lucky to have had him in our lives. He will be missed, but will be our "rock and roll angel" and will be taking care of all of us from his lounge chair in heaven (even if there is a Rockies game on!)

Dave, sweet and positive, even when he didn't feel well. I don't know why but he loved my smile and never forgot my name. I came to know his family and loved all of them, especially their personal stories. Dave and Sandra did such a great job of showing their love and compassion for eachother and their kids.
