David McWhirter Obituary

David Ian McWhirter of Colorado Springs died at home surrounded by family on Saturday, June 1, 2013. David was born June 5, 1937 in Tonawanda, New York to William and Ruth (Schulz) McWhirter. He graduated from Tonawanda High School in 1955, the State University of New York at Geneseo, New York in 1959, Lexington Theological Seminary (formerly College of the Bible) in Lexington, Kentucky in 1962. He was ordained into the Christian ministry on June 10, 1962 at Grove Street Christian Church in Tonawanda, New York. He went on to complete an archival program at Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York in 1966. He was the Assistant Librarian at Christian Theological Seminary for 14 years (1962-1976) and Librarian and Archivist at Disciples of Christ Historical Society in Nashville, Tennessee for 25 years (1976 - 2002). He was a member of American Theological Library Association, American Library Association, and the Indianapolis "500" Gordon Pipers. He was a member of Vine Street Christian Church of Nashville, Tennessee for 25 years before moving to Colorado Springs in July of 2002. He became a member of First Christian Church of Colorado Springs where he served as an elder and deacon, and played in the hand bell choir. He married Donna J. Hoyt on September 9, 1961 and they enjoyed 51 years of married life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Ruth, and his sister, Marie Anne Bator. David is survived by his wife, Donna, two daughters Heather (Keith) Seger of Nashville, Tennessee and Leslie (Bryan) Leake of Cleburne, Texas and three grandchildren Ethan (12) and Matthew (10) Leake and Kaila Seger (10). A service of celebration will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, June 10, 2013 at First Christian Church, 16 East Platte Avenue. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Disciples of Christ Historical Society, 1101 19th Avenue South, Nashville, TN 37212.
