David Werner Ortlieb died peacefully Wednesday January 3, 2024. He was born October 20, 1930 in Appleton, Wisconsin to Mary Werner Ortlieb and Norman John Ortlieb. He spent his early years in New London, Wisconsin often spending summers in Waupaca.
As Dirty Harry said: "A man has to know his limitations!" The twin paradoxical necessities of self-reliance and independence and the humanity that comes when one finds oneself a long way from perfection were evident in David's life.
David W. Ortlieb retired as a health care executive who was active in the management of health care companies and as an entrepreneur. He had a distinguished career in big-pharma and bio-pharma having managed international health care operations for 25 years.
Mr. Ortlieb served as a Director, President and Chief Executive Officer of Texas Biotechnology Corporation, Immunomedics and Erbamont, N. V. and as a Founder of the former. Mr. Ortlieb was an executive of Abbott Laboratories, a health care and consumer products company from 1972 to 1983, serving as Corporate Executive Vice President and President of its subsidiary, Abbott International, Ltd. from 1975 to 1983 and as a Director of Abbott Laboratories from 1977 to 1983. Prior to that, he held various senior management positions with Mead Johnson & Company, a pharmaceutical and nutritional company and American Home Products Company, a pharmaceutical and consumer products manufacturer.
He served on a number of Boards of Directors of companies competing in a variety of Industries. Mr. Ortlieb earned a B. S. from Lawrence University and an M. B. A. from Indiana University where he also served on the Faculty.
Mr. Ortlieb married Janet Evans of Green Bay, Wisconsin in August 1955 and they had three children, David E., Anne E. and Catherine W. all of whom survive their parents. Janet Evans Ortlieb died on March 6, 2013 of complications of Alzheimer's.
It was David's wish that no formal service be held.
