December 15, 2021

Colonel David A. Powell of Gleneagle, CO, passed away on 15 December 2021. He was born West Chester, PA, on 14 May 1939, to Wayne and Mary Powell and graduated from Unionville High School in 1957. The day after graduation, Dave enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and became a Survival School Instructor at Stead AB, NV. He met the love of his life, Patricia Hamilton, and they married in Reno, NV, in 1960. He was selected to attend Officers Candidate School and after receiving his commission, Dave began a career as a Transportation Officer. This field led to assignments all over the globe, to include a yearlong tour in South Vietnam. He commanded Airmen at several levels, culminating his career as the commander of the Aerial Port at Dover AFB, DE. He received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and his Master of Science in Education from the University of Southern California while on active duty, and is a graduate of Squadron Officers School, Air Command and Staff College, as well as Air War College.

Following his retirement, Dave and Patty moved to Gleneagle, where he worked for several years at Higginbotham/Briggs and Associates as a Planning Consultant for defense and military projects. He also served on the Donala Water and Sanitation District Board, as well as on the board of the Gleneagle Civic Association. An avid runner, Dave enjoyed competing against himself at events throughout his life, and since retirement, those events provided opportunities to explore Colorado and the region. Exploration wasn't limited to the local area, Dave and Patty continued their global adventure and took many trips to include European river cruises and African safaris.

Dave is survived by his loving wife, Patty, his sons, Martin and Matt, his daughter-in-law, Beth, and his grandchildren, Kayleigh, Spencer, Drew and Claire. A remembrance service will be held at Swan Law Funeral Home on 6 January, 2022, at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Tri-Lakes Cares (tri-lakescares.org). An internment will be held at a later date at Friendship UMC in Gum Tree, PA.
