Dean Edmonds Obituary

Dean Keith Edmonds, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2011 in Palmer Lake, Colorado. He was born in Loveland, Colorado, April 7, 1924 and raised in multiple communities around the state. Dean worked on the road crew for the National Park Service and for several years as an auto mechanic before putting himself through school by owning and operating his own sheet metal business. Dean earned both his Bachelors (1960 Mech Eng) and Masters (1966 Chem Eng) degrees from the University of Colorado before settling into his career as a Certified Professional Engineer. His engineering days began at the National Bureau of Standards in Boulder and he later moved into the Civil Service working for the Department of Defense at Fort Carson (Colorado Springs), Wiesbaden Army Base (West Germany), Fort Dix (New Jersey) and Fort Belvoir (Virginia). He enjoyed playing table tennis and international folk dancing several nights a week following his retirement. He also found time to write a two volume book entitled “Adam's Holy Mountain which spoke to the origin of civilization from the viewpoints of science, mythology and the Bible. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dean and Eva Edmonds; and by his younger sister, Frances Shipley. He is survived by his wife, Meg Edmonds of Palmer Lake; son, Robert of Westminster; son, Mark (Qiyra) of Lyons; two granddaughters; his younger brother, Dale (Sandy) of Redmond, Oregon; and multiple nieces and nephews. A celebration of life is being held Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 2:00pm at the Little Log Church, 133 High Street, Palmer Lake. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Palmer Divide Blanket Brigade, PO Box 222, Palmer Lake, CO 80133 or to the charity of your choice.

Dean was so encouraging to me when I was a brand new folk dancer. He would take my hand and always give me confidence. I also enjoyed hearing him tell about his early days driving up in the mountains. I will miss him so, so much. My heart aches for his family, for the loss of such a presence.

It was a real pleasure to have known Dean. He was always such a happy person who truly enjoyed folk dancing. I will remember Dean as always having a smile on his face and having a good sense of humor, always enjoying a good laugh. I feel fortunate to have been able to dance with him many times at Washington Park as well as at Maple Grove Grange. He was always there! My sympathy to all the family in the loss of someone so special. He was loved and will be missed by all of us.

My heart goes out to Dean's family. His devotion and commitment to dancing must have been matched only by that dedication to those he loved. We danced together for more than 40 years, and his presence is missed bythe folk dancers in Boulder.

I will miss Dean at folk dancing, and I would second all that the other folk dancers have said about his smiling face, his enthusiasm, and his dedication. I want to express my condolences to his family. Peggy Livingston, Boulder, Colorado.

As a fellow folk-dancer, I knew Dean through that activity for many years. He would drive long distances, from Palmer Lake up to Boulder and Denver, twice and sometimes three times a week, to join the recreational folkdance groups here. He was always good-humored - and humorous! - and, what I particularly loved about him was that he was an absolutely fearless dancer. He would try any dance, new or old, especially those requiring partners. If his partner was uncertain he'd provide plenty of guidance. Until just a few years before his death, he was always game to do the more strenuous couple dances, like the Swedish hambo.
Over the years we all enjoyed hearing the stories of Dean's life adventures - working on the road in Rocky Mountain National Park, herding the occasional tourist on a dude ranch, savoring life in Germany.
Folkdancers in Denver and Boulder will miss him very much.
