I met Debbie at the start of seventh grade in 1974. I was the geeky new girl and Debbie invited me to sit with her at lunch. By the start of 10th grade, we were inseparable. Football games, basketball games, sleepovers at each other’s houses, youth group activities at church, we were always together. I saw my first scary movies at her house. Our favorite was one that had a severed hand that kept chasing people—Debbie loved to wait until the house was dark, then grab me, I’d scream and she’d dissolve into giggles.

Our senior year in high school, we were at a football game…I don’t know exactly what happened, but next thing I knew we were going for a drive with some guy named George, in his new car. Things seemed to happen like that around Debbie—it was like I got sucked into some time warp and was left wondering “how did we end up here”. A few weeks later, she was engaged to this George guy and I was afraid I was going to lose my friend. But, George was quite a guy, and adopted me as part of the family.

She taught me so much: how to put on makeup, how to dance, how to cook my first Thanksgiving turkey, how to grow orchids. She knew things. Whenever I have a problem, my first thought is “I bet Debbie knows what to do.”

We graduated high school; Debbie and George got married; I went away to college; Hollie and Chris were born; I got married; but Debbie was always just a phone call away. Sometimes we talked every day, sometimes months would pass between calls, but we always picked up right where we left off.

I will miss my friend, but I know that when my time on earth is done she’ll be waiting for me at the gates of heaven. Well, knowing Debbie, she’ll be hiding behind the gate and as I pass through she’ll jump out and yell “Gotcha”!

Our thoughts and Prayers to the Phillips Family. We knew Debbie and George thru Hollie and Debbie will be missed at the Farmers Market and other places where she sold her jellies. She was a very generous and kind person. RIP Debbie.
