Dennis Brady Obituary

Dennis James Brady of Colorado Springs, Colorado died December 7th. Dennis was born on December 16th, 1940, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Dr. E. James Brady and Jane Kimzey Brady. He grew up in Colorado Springs, attended Cheyenne Mountain High School and then graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in 1965 as a Business major, with a minor in Fine Arts. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Nancy Cameron Brady and children and grand children: Amy Morrison, Cammie Morrison Collins and her children Preot and Cameron, Ann Brady Johnston and her husband Sam and their children Ellie, Brady, and Zander, Robb Brady and his wife Beth and their children Kate and Bo, and Pard Morrison and his wife Amy and their children Cale and Maeve Morrison. Dennis also had two younger brothers, James Brady and Phillip Brady who survive him. In his life, Dennis touched many people through his work in psychiatry. From 1966 to 1981 he held the title of Administrator at the Emory John Brady Hospital (now Cedar Springs Hospital) in Colorado Springs, an institution founded by his grandfather, Dr. Emory John Brady. During this time, and throughout his life, he was involved with and belonged to many organizations including; the Political Action Committee of the National Association of Private Psychiatric Hospitals (Board of Directors), the Mental Health Law Advisory Committee, the Proprietary Hospital Committee of the National Association of Private Psychiatric Hospitals, Region IV Inpatient Acute Care Task Force (Chairman), Secretary of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Private Psychiatric Hospitals, Recipient Awards Committee-National Association of Private Psychiatric Hospitals, Councilor and Treasurer of the Central Neuropsychiatric Hospital Association, Lay Advisory Board of the Beth-el School of Nursing, Vice-President of the Board of Trustees of the Brady Foundation for Mental Health, Secretary-Treasurer of the E. James Brady, M.D., Psychiatric Professional Corporation. In 1983, Dennis and his wife Nancy began a partnership in creating wooden folk art sculptures. From this partnership came a successful business that made them respected artists throughout the Southwest and saw their artwork sell to collectors through galleries from Hawaii to Aspen. A true son of Colorado, Dennis was also an outdoorsman, rancher and conservationist. He was the president of the Pikes Peak Cattleman's Association, an early member of the Pikes Peak Range Riders, and Soil Savers. He thrived until his last days maintaining the Lazy EJ Ranch east of Colorado Springs - a sanctuary for the Brady family for over 30 years. The mountain lakes, rivers and streams of Colorado are where Dennis practiced his passion for fly fishing. He fished prolifically throughout his life. As an Orvis-certified guide this was a professional hobby that allowed him to apply the sense of an outdoorsman with his creative skills. None but the most wily trout escaped his cast - but all were released unharmed. Graveside services will held privately by his family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the E.J.Brady Lectureship in Biological Psychiatry through the University of Colorado Foundation, PO Box 17126, Denver, CO 80217-9155, www.cufund.org. or Pike's Peak Hospice Foundation, 825 East Pike's Peak Avenue, Suite 600 Colorado Springs, CO 80903-3624. Dennis' family will celebrate his life in January, 2011.

Dear Nancy and family, I am so sorry to hear of Dennis' passing. He sure was a fair, likeable and quality man. I always had a fondness for him since I met him up at 11 Mile Reservoir. His passion for his family and for fishing were admirable. There will be many on this earth who will miss him, and many a trout are breathing a sigh of relief. If there is anything that you all need help with, please do not hesitate to call.

I am very sorry to hear of the loss of Dennis. I have known Dennis since playing hockey against him in high school, 50 + years ago. Back then there was a great rivalary between Cheyenne Mountain and Colorado Springs High School. In my opinion Dennis was a great competitor and quality person. Over the years I have run into Dennis about once a year. I have alway enjoyed these breif conversations. I will miss them.

Respectfully,

Bill Matthews
