Diane Rae Ashton, 74, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, passed away peacefully with her sons by her side on Friday, May 31, 2024. Her passing culminated a multi-year battle with pulmonary arterial hypertension.
Diane was born in Denver, Colorado in 1949 to Maxine (Weller) and Russell Ashton. Throughout her childhood, she was an active member of Central Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and Campfire Girls. Diane graduated from Wheat Ridge High School in 1967, and the School of Nursing at the University of Colorado in 1972.
After relocating to Colorado Springs in 1973, Diane began a distinguished 40-year career as a public health nurse with the El Paso County Public Health Department.
Diane was an active member of the Colorado Springs community. She served both her local and regional First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) communities in nearly every lay leadership way possible, led vaccination clinics, and invested in future healthcare professionals through her work with UCCS.
Those close to Diane knew she was very active, with a zest for life and a dedication to social justice. She was a cancer survivor who loved cycling, skiing, traveling (especially to Maui), spending quality time with friends, and cheering on the Colorado Buffaloes and Golden State Warriors. Her most treasured way to spend her time was with her grandchildren and family.
Diane is preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Maxine Ashton. Diane is survived by her brother, Roger Ashton (Lynne Koehler); her sons and daughters-in-law, Aaron Nakai, Candice Valenzuela, Corey and Susan Nakai; and her grandchildren, Ashton, Amaya and Liana Nakai.
A celebration of life will take place at First Christian Church of Colorado Springs on June 14, at 11am. Memorial donations can be given in her honor to the Children's Art Project at MD Anderson Cancer Center. To Dianne's family, especially Corey and Aaron. Of all of the things your mom did, the most important was being your mother and grandmother to your children ,.
