Dilworth Sellers Obituary

Dilworth Parramore "Buz" Sellers, MD, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 80 of natural causes on October 16, 2016. He was a resident of Colorado Springs for 45 years.

Buz grew up in Abilene, Texas, as part of a West Texas ranching family. He attended Rice University, playing varsity tennis and receiving a BA in History. He then attended University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, receiving his MD degree in June 1963. He married Judith Bagwell three days later. He then served as a physician in the U.S. Air Force in Bangor, Maine. Buz and his family moved to Colorado Springs in 1971 after completing his cardiology training in Dallas and Denver. Buz co-founded Colorado Springs Cardiologists and worked in private practice until his retirement in 2002. In addition to his outstanding medical skills, Buz was an exceptionally kind, caring physician who took great interest in the lives of his patients.

Upon his retirement, Buz was able to devote more time to other interests, including tennis, history of the American West, and his family ranch in Texas. Fly fishing was Buz's great passion, and he spent part of nearly every summer in the Greater Yellowstone area, his favorite part of the world. Buz also had the privilege of fishing in New Zealand, Vancouver Island, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Baja California, Belize and Argentina.

Buz was an active board member of the Plains Indian Museum in Cody, Wyoming, and previously served on the boards of Palmer Land Trust and Silver Key Senior Services.

Above all, Buz adored his family. "Papa", as he was known to his grandchildren, reveled in the family holiday gatherings that were never missed (he was quite a Santa on Christmas morning), relished the family being together on numerous ski trips and other adventures, and especially loved cheering on his sons and grandkids at countless sporting events throughout the years.

Buz is survived by his wife of 53 years, Judith Bagwell Sellers of Colorado Springs, as well as his sister Eleanor (Robert) Hoppe of Abilene, his sons John (Christine) Sellers and Scott (Lara) Sellers of the San Francisco Bay Area, his adored grandchildren Kristin, Justin, Samantha, Jessica and Jason, and many extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, Erle Dees Sellers, MD, and Nellie Parramore Sellers of Abilene, Texas. Buz was beloved by all his family and his many friends.

A celebration of life for Buz will be held at Broadmoor Community Church, 315 Lake Avenue, in Colorado Springs on Monday, November 14, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. We welcome all friends and family at the service.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish to make gifts in Buz's honor may donate to Palmer Land Trust (102 S. Tejon Street, Suite 360, Colorado Springs 80903), the Plains Indian Museum of the Center of the American West (https://centerofthewest.org/get-involved/make-a-gift/), or the Catamount Institute (740 W. As a cardiologist, Dr. Sellers was doubly good. He not only cared for my physical heart, he encouraged my spiritual heart. It is fitting that I think of him most often during my neighborhood exercise walks.

Your pride in him surely must "runneth over" .

Mine goes way back to either 3rd or 4th grade at Alta Vista Elem. School in Abilene. I was ill with the measles, and Buzzy, my classmate, rode over on his horse to bring me some wild flowers he had picked. My mother told me it was a white horse. I wouldn't go to the door because I looked so bad with the measles. He continued to be a knight on a white horse to all his patients , I'm sure. I saw him last at an Abilene High Reunion a few years back.

I served with Buz @ the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, and he was always good company. It's hard to believe that he's gone after a fine trip to Rumania with Judy, arriving home healthy and happy. What a great way to go. but too premature.

We've lost a really good AHS Eagle! My husband and I graduated with Buz, and he was always such a gentleman. I'm sorry he's gone.

Dr. Sellers never let any of my treadmill time go to waste. He and I would exchange lots of stories about Abilene and Anson, often for the benefit of the nurse who was helping nearby.

None of my doctors ever befriended me as much as Dr. Sellers. Congratulations on your blessing.

I hope this message makes it to the family. Buzz was one of my favorite cousins even though he was a generation ahead of me. He was first cousin to my dad Tom Sellers. Buzz and Judy were close to my immediate family when they lived in Atlanta in the 1960's. I am so happy that my son, Parker and I got to visit them again last year in Colorado Springs. My heart breaks for Judy, John, Scott, Eleanor and their families. A great loss for us all.

Buz was a dear family member, cousin to my father, Tom Sellers, and like a warm "uncle" to me, my brother, sister and our children. I remember that he and his wife Judy moved into our childhood home to "baby sit" for some days when he was a medical intern in Atlanta. I also remember talking him into adopting one of my puppies and surprising Judy and his boys with "Hershel". He was a special man.

For the family - I didn't know Buz well but always appreciated the opportunity to sit beside him at any of the Buffalo Bill functions. He will be missed in that setting. My condolences for your loss.
