Donald Alley Obituary

Alley
DONALD WAYNE ALLEY
April 21, 1945 November 9, 2020
Donald Wayne Alley, age 75, passed away peacefully, with his wife Judy by his side, on November 9th, 2020, after a brief but courageous battle with leukemia.
Don was born to Louise Kidd Alley and Kenneth G. Alley on April 21st, 1945, in Cheyenne, WY. They later moved to Wheat Ridge, CO where the Alley family grew with four beautiful daughters.
Don graduated from Wheat Ridge High School in 1963, and Adams State College in 1967. He was inducted into the Adams State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004.
Don was always active in sports and excelled in many of them. In 1967 he was drafted by the Baltimore Colts, and played in the NFL for several years for the Colts, Steelers, and Chargers. Injury led to his retirement from football but drove him to become a PGA golf professional.
Don became the Head Golf Pro at Sunset Golf Course in Longmont, CO. Then on to Valley Hi and Glenn Eagle in Colorado Springs, CO. As President of the Colorado Chapter of the PGA, he met and played with fellow professionals and amateurs throughout the state and country.
Don enjoyed teaching golf, especially to young people. He wanted to instill in them sportsmanship, the importance of the rules, and the love for the game.
After retiring from professional golf, Don was drawn to jet skiing. The family spent endless days on the water. For 10 years, Don led his family on trips to Lake Powell and anywhere else there was a decent body of water. Nights were spent staying up late, looking at the stars, playing Shanghai and enjoying being a family.
Don was a kind and generous man, who loved his wife, family, and friends. His levelheaded advice to his sons is now understood and appreciated.
He loved a competitive game of golf or gin with his friends, and was always quick with a joke or a story.
Don will be missed by many individuals whose lives he touched.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Louise and Kenneth Alley. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Judith, sons: Raymond Brown (Melissa), Eric Young (Jennifer), and grandson Aidan Brown. He is also survived by his four sisters: Barbara Alverson (David), Janet Slaughter (Doug), Susan Bilderback (Robert), and Judy Alley, all of Denver, CO. Also surviving are numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a memorial celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Pike's Peak Hospice or the First Tee of Pike's Peak.

Sad, so sad.
Don was a great athlete, but he was an even greater human.
One day somewhere around 10 or 15 years ago, Don called out of the blue, asking how I was. Conversation led to golf; he suggested we play. A few days later, Don drove to Broomfield, and we played a round of golf on the course where I live. A PGA pro, and fantastic athlete, Don was so patient and understanding with me and my golf game. During the round, we talked of that marvelous and wondrous 1962-63, his Senior year year at WRHS. I remembered Don’s personal performances at WRHS. He was a starter and huge contributor in three sports. In football he was truly outstanding, he started on both sides of the ball, offense and defense. So outstanding in fact, he received numerous college scholarship offers. Don was a starting forward on the State Champion WRHS Farmer basketball team, a powerful rebounder, outstanding defender and a potent offensive threat. Don was an outstanding defensive catcher, and a strong clutch hitter on a very good baseball team. All of his teams had outstanding success. WRHS tied for the Jeffco league championship in football. They were State Champs in Basketball. Don helped power WRHS to a very good baseball season. I remember Don hitting a towering home run that in my memory traveled clear over 32nd avenue, landing on the Crown Hill property. A huge home run. Don thought the ball cleared the school perimeter fence, landing on 32nd Avenue and bounced on to the Crown Hill site. I prefer my memory! The only other person I can recall that ever performed such a feat was Dave Logan, some 8 years later.

We chatted about his pro career playing in the NFL, playing with the likes of Hall of Fame Johnny Unitas. Don was so humble as I brought up so many fond memories. Don passed the praise, giving credit to those who helped make it possible. He recalled leaders at Wheat Ridge High School, Mr Don Solem, his Principal, Blair Work, his football coach, Harvey Moore his basketball coach and Bill Proctor his baseball coach.

I remembered how loyal and supportive to WRHS athletics and to the entire WR community, to anyone who met him, his father Ken was.

That wonderful 4 hour round of golf just flew by. Don Alley was a true friend. So, so sorry.
