Donald Diaz Obituary

Donald "Don" Gilbert
Diaz
March 12, 1942
February 7, 2026

A life dedicated to service and a smile that could light up a room, Donald Gilbert Diaz was born March 12, 1942, in Coral Gables, FL to the late Robert Diaz and the late Martha Mitchell. As a youth, Don played drums professionally, participated in YMCA programs, and was active in the Boy Scouts of America, where he earned his Eagle Scout rank. After attending the University of North Georgia and St. Andrews Presbyterian College, Don proudly served his country in the United States Navy and retired after 28 years of dedicated service. During his time in the military, he served during the Vietnam War as an Electronic Warfare Officer on ships and P-3s, and as a Bombardier-Navigator in A-6s. Subsequently, Don transitioned into the Naval Space Operations field where he spent time supporting NORAD, the Joint Staff, and ultimately commanding the Naval Space Surveillance System. After retirement, he continued to serve the U.S. Military as a defense contractor.
Don believed in service to his nation and fellow man. His love of service kept him close to the Boy Scouts of America program, where he was an active member for over 50 years. He volunteered thousands of hours at various levels: from the leader of his son's Cub Scout pack to higher national-level positions. His long-term leadership led to the Silver Buffalo, Silver Antelope, and Silver Beaver awards. He believed in the Scout Oath, Law, and Motto, and this manifested in how he acted and what he did for others. He loved to mentor youth leadership and believed the Boy Scouts developed our nation's youth in a positive manner. He was always supportive and quick to give a big smile and a "You're doing a good job," to all around him.
Don was predeceased by his parents, his beloved wife of 48 years, Judy, his sister, Julia Diaz, and his stepfather, Raymond Mitchell. He is survived by his daughter Jennifer (Jamie) Berry of Cumming, GA, his son David (Catharina) Diaz, currently living in Wiesbaden, Germany, and five grandchildren: Tristan, Andrew, Jackson, Jillian, and Juliette.
A memorial service will be held in his honor on April 7, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at First Lutheran Church of Colorado Springs, Colorado. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Scouting America - Pathway to the Rockies Council, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, or the Memorial Fund of First Lutheran Church in his memory.
A graveside service with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on a date to be determined.
