January 5, 2022

Donald Holliday passed away January 5, 2022, with his adoring wife holding his hand. He is preceded in death by his parents, Donald B. Holliday Sr. and Eva (Shaw) Holliday. He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Stephanie Cardwell, as well as his brother, Tom Holliday, (Ann) from Biloxi, Mississippi and sisters, Linda (Richard Mueller) and Pat Holliday from Long Beach Mississippi. Also, many nephews, nieces, and cousins. He was Godfather to Leo and Delphi Lyra, of Boise, Idaho.

Donald joined the Army at age 19 and was trained to be a helicopter pilot, which he loved. He had two tours in Vietnam and three tours in Germany. The Army sent him to Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, where he received his Bachelor's Degree with Honors in Applied Math. Donald met and married the love of his life in Colorado Springs in 1981. During his last tour in Germany, they traveled extensively all over Europe. He was honored by the Army to receive The Bronze Star with three Oak leaves, plus many more medals and ribbons. When Donald retired from the Army after 20 years, in 1986, they returned to Colorado Springs. Donald studied computer science at UCCS, and then enjoyed a second career working for National Systems and Research, Co. and later for LexisNexis.

After retiring a second time, he began volunteering for District 11 Grandfriends program. For 12 years he went to Midland Elementary School every morning to help the First Graders learn to read. In the afternoon, he went to Palmer High School to the Math Tutoring Center to help students with math. He loved teaching and mentoring all his students!

Donald was an extremely intelligent and curious man. He was interested in everything and everybody. He could tell you all about the stock market, how much farmland in Iowa cost, and the theory of baking bread, which he dearly loved to do. He and Stephanie continued to travel. They also did extensive fundraising for community non-profits. For 14 years they helped raise funds for Care and Share with an event called Taste of the Nation. They also raised money for Marian House Soup Kitchen, Urban Peak, and The Crawford House.

His family would like to thank the following organizations for helping Donald: BEO Home Care, Encompass Therapy, the Colorado CareAssist Cascade House, Abode Hospice, and CSFD Paramedics. Thanks too for the care and love from all friends and family. The world has lost a most remarkable person!

Services will be at Pikes Peak National Cemetery at 1:00 on January 25, 2022, with a reception to follow.

Instead of flowers, please donate to Midland Elementary School or Palmer High School Math Tutoring Center.
