Donald Jewell Obituary

Donald Lynn Jewell, age 67, died unexpectedly on the 12th of October 2016, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. A service of remembrance and celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, October 20th, 2016 at Woodmen Valley Chapel, Stone Chapel at 3 pm. Pastor and friend, Mark Meyer of Christ the King Lutheran Church will be officiating.

Don was a man of great faith. He was deeply committed to serving his Lord, his country, and his family. The greatest loves in his life were his wife, Linda, and daughter, Dawn. Don married Linda Ann Plante on October 13th 1979. They would have celebrated 37 years of marriage on the day following his death.

Don was born in Louisville, Kentucky to Louise Priscilla Gross and the late Robert Franks on May 15th, 1949. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Kentucky and a MBA from the University of Oklahoma.

Don selflessly served in the United States Air Force for 30 years as an aviator, navigator, and space subject matter expert. He completed two Command assignments at Schriever Air Force Base and retired as Deputy Chief Scientist for Air Force Space Command.

After retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel, Don held several notable positions which include serving on two GPS review teams he founded, and on three independent assessment teams at the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA). He also enjoyed writing for GPS World Magazine as a defense editor for 11 years.

A close respected friend said, "Don was a real Pillar for the PNT community and the consummate spokesman for the truth - always offering constructive criticism where needed... [He was] an exemplary personality who 'always did the right thing'."

In his personal life, Don had many loving friends whom he called brothers and sisters in Christ. He participated in and regularly led weekly bible study meetings for over 20 years and was recently appointed as president of Christ the King Lutheran Church.

Don is survived by his mother, Louise Jewell; sister, Teresa Jewell; wife Linda Jewell; and daughter, Dawn Jewell. He is missed by many extended family members.

Memorial contributions may be made out to Christ the King Lutheran Church http://www.ctkcs.org, or the Amyloidosis Foundation http://www.amyloidosis.org, in memory of Don Jewell.

As Don's brother in law, I knew that he provided the family balance for my sister. I always enjoyed his calm presence and objectivity when I did have an opportunity to talk with him. I know that he has left a void with all those that knew him.

Love you man!

I worked with Linda Jewell at AFSPC/DR for several years and with Don on various GPS matters. He was always an intelligent and gracious human being. He will be greatly missed. Our prayers go out to the Jewell family.
