Donald McCarthy Obituary

McCarthy, Jr.
Donald Paul
McCarthy, Jr.

Donald P. McCarthy, Jr. ("Don"), ( October 27, 1962 - August 3rd, 2025) , 62, of Colorado Springs, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, after a long and courageous battle with lymphoma, fortified by the love of his wife , and by his five children, whom he considered his greatest legacy.
Born in Syracuse, NY, Don was known for his sharp intellect, quick wit, and steadfast devotion to those he loved. A devoted husband and proud father, he also shared an enduring bond with his five siblings—a tie of affection and loyalty that distance and time could never weaken.
Don built a distinguished career as a principal engineer in semiconductors, applying a brilliant mind and entrepreneurial spirit to work he loved. Yet his deepest fulfillment came from the bonds of family, where he found his true vocation in loving, providing for, and guiding those entrusted to his care.
In his final years, Don faced illness with extraordinary courage and dignity. At his side, his wife Maureen offered steadfast care, advocacy, and devotion. Together they met the trials that test even the strongest bonds, yet theirs endured—refined by the journey, anchored in trust, loyalty, and love to his last breath.
He cherished hockey, fishing, and hiking. On occasion, a glass of Irish whiskey, shared with those he loved. Family vacations on Bald Head Island (NC) offered him rest, joy, and time for reflection among those dearest to him.
Don will be remembered for his intellect, humor, loyalty, and the warmth he brought to all whose lives he touched.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Maureen Kilian McCarthy; his children: Sean (Kayla), Martin, Claudia, Lulu, and Nicholas; his stepchildren: Francis Xavier ("Fran") Vázquez-Kilian, Ana Vázquez-Kilian, and George Rivero-Kilian; and his siblings: Deborah McCarthy, Maureen Papaleo (Joe), Beth Gerde (Chris), Theresa McCarthy (David), and Tom McCarthy (Deirdre). He will also be remembered fondly by extended family, friends, colleagues, and all whose lives were made brighter by his presence.
A funeral mass will be held for Don on Monday, September 1st at 11:00 AM at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Colorado Springs, CO. An inurnment will take place at the St. Francis Columbarium immediately following the mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society.

It was very sad to hear of Don's passing. My prayers go out to Don's family. I was a roommate of Don's at BC. Although he "left us" for BU, he never really left and we had 4 terrifically fun years with him in Boston and for years after. When Brian O'Connell let us know of Don's passing, just how important Don was to our friendship group was immediately evident. Emails went back and forth for two weeks with Don stories and memories flowing like they had happened last week. He was that kind of guy. Brian, Bill Kotopoulos, Bob Burke, Dany Letourneau, Mike Sputo, Mike Baer, John Banks and Tony Manzanero all saluted him as I do now. He was something else.
