Donald Milner Obituary

Donald Paul Milner, (Lt. Colonel Retired) 72 of Colorado Springs, CO passed away May 31, 2011 Don was born on a farm in Republic County, KS. He spent over 20 years in the Air force. While a pilot in the Vietnam War he was decorated for his bravery with the Silver Star and 4 Distinguished Flying Crosses. After retiring from the Air Force he spent 19 years teaching math in District 20 at Eagleview Middle School. He was a good husband, father, pilot, teacher and great provider for his family. He will be dearly missed. Don is survived by his wife Sandi, his daughter Sharon Johnson (Scott), son Clark Milner (Maria), grandchildren Shannon, Tonya, Troy, Dallin, Shelby, Hunter, Brooke, McKenzie all of Colorado Springs and his sister Francis Gehrke of Herrington, KS. Donald Paul Milner's Visitation Services will be held at Shrine of Remembrance from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday, June 2, 2011. Memorial service is Friday, June 3 at 11:00AM at the Church of Jesus Christ of LDS at 5375 Centennial Blvd. Burial will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, CO.

I will always remember how at lunch time he would come into the counseling conference room sit down, close his eyes and have a power nap for 20 minutes. At the end of 20 minutes up he would pop and back to class. He was a great kind math teacher at Timberview Middle school!

Donald Paul was my first cousin. We grew up together in Republic County Kansas. We were only six weeks apart in age and spent a lot of time together with our dogs and ponies on the Washburn farm where both families lived for several years in the late 1940s. We attended the Odell country school together in the 4th grade, which Don's mother, Aunt Sarah taught. The extended Milner families were a close knit farm family spending many Sundays at our Grandparents Ray and May Milner's farm home for Grandma's chicken and noodles and all of the wonderful dishes made by our mothers and aunts. The many cousins played steal sticks and kick the can while the grown ups made home made ice cream and talked local gossip and pondered world events. Not much money but a great way to grow up. Don and I kept in touch over the years. Don and Sandi always attended Cousin get togethers at my sister Alta Mae Canvanugh's home when ever Marcia and I came back for a visit. We exchanged birthday greetings each year. The last being his phone call to me on my birthday last March. We joked that I wasn't jealous of him being the oldest anymore. I will miss him.

Dear Sandi, I was sorry to read of Don's passing. I thought of you two not long ago as I drove past The Centre and wondered where you were and what you were doing now. I no longer do the books for The Centre but remember back to those days. You and your family have my sincerest sympathy and I pray your fond memories help you through the rough days ahead.

My heart sank when I heard of Don's passing. Don and I go way back to Air Academy Jr. High days. His students loved all the war stories and I also remember those cartwheels in the hall. One day at Eagleview I had a group of students run into my office saying "we think Mr. Milner might be dead". He was simply taking another one of those catnaps that he did so well.

My deep condolences to the Milner family on their loss of such a fine man. I did not know Don, but I have the utmost respect and admiration for his son Clark and son in law Scott, and my heart goes out to them for their loss.

I was lucky enough to work with Don for a few years. My first year, I was a litle intimidaed by him, he was a litle gruff on the outside. But I found out, as did the students, he was really a teddy bear who would give you the shirt off his back. I offer my heartfelt condolences for your loss and the loss to the community.

I was a counselor at Eagleview many years ago and I will always remember Don because he would come into the counseling office during his lunch break and take a 15 minute nap! I was so amazed that anyone could just fall a sleep in so short of a time. And yes he was a very very good math teacher. My husband Terry Luke also flew in Viet Nam and died 9 years ago of Agent orange so we spoke about the military very often. My regrets to you and your family.
