Donald Thomas Obituary

Donald Kenneth Thomas spent his life pursing adventures as an avid outdoorsman. Born March 2, 1928 to Edward F. Thomas and Grace J. Thomas (Rock), Don grew up ranching the high plains of Southeastern Colorado with his father. Much of his youth was spent camping, hunting, fishing and skiing. His interest in guns and ammunition led him work as an Artillery Repairman in the Civil Service at Ft. Carson in the 50's and 60's. His love of hunting and fishing led him start his own business - Western Sporting Goods - on the Westside of Colorado Springs in the 70's. He married Mary Ann Bergman October 3, 1973. Although he sold the business, he continued to do gunsmith work along with his pursuit of hunting and fishing until his death. While attending a gun show in Denver, Don broke a hip. He died Monday, November 21, 2005 of complications during dialysis prior to hip surgery. He is survived by his stepson - James D. Clark. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, December 3rd, at 11:00 a.m. at: Remmington's Cheyenne Mountain Resort 3225 Broadmoor Valley Road Colorado Springs, Colorado (State Highway 115 and Cheyenne Mtn Blvd). In lieu of flowers, send memorial contributions to: Peak Hospice and Palliative Care 825 East Pikes Peak Ave., Suite 600 Colorado Springs, CO 80903-3624 OR National Rifle Association of America 11250 Waples Mill Road Fairfax, VA 22030.

I never met Don but he sounds like he was quite a character. He is sadly missed by very close personal friends of mine.

I am Don's first cousin. When my wife and I were transferred to Denver, Colorado in the early 1960's, it gave us a chance to see my aunt and uncle Grace and Ed Thomas at their home near Ellicott. Very often Don would come out to spend the day and we always enjoyed his manner and sense of humor. Reminded us very much of one one of Grace's brothers. After leaving Colorado we did not get back there often enough but did see Grace, Don and Mary a couple more times. We have wonderful memories.

We're Don's first cousins. We used to stop and see his parents on our drive back to Wisconsin. Mary and Don would drive out to the ranch just to see us. With four kids we were too much for Don to handle. The last time we saw him was after Mary's death. What a saint he was to his parents and Mary.

Happy Hunting, Don

(and from Bonnie)

After her husband's death, I remember Don's mother,Grace,

talking about Don, Mary, Jim and all the things they did together. Way out there on the prairie, I knew how important this was to her. Her family gave her reason to expand her interests and feel supported.

Don made friends and acquaintances through his work and because he liked people. Every once in awhile he would call us. It was good to hear that recognizable gruff and friendly voice. We will miss him.

I first met Don back in 1990 at his gun shop when I was travelling back and forth to Colorado Springs from Omaha NE. I had the pleasure of re-establishing our acquaintance through the V Z Reed Hose Company. Don's hunting stories will always be a highlight of my memories of him. I will miss him!
