Doreen F. Wetzig, born on Staten Island, New York, December 29, 1923, departed this life peacefully at home on April 13, 2021. She was the daughter of Charles W. and Dorothy Hudson Brugger. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Paul C. Wetzig, M.D., sons Carl Kurt Wetzig, M.D., Richard Paul Wetzig, M.D., son-in-law John "Skip" Brand III, sister Myrtle Woodward, and sister-inlaw Betty Stratford, M.D.
Deen is survived by her two daughters, Dorothy W. (Dorrie) Brand, and Laura Wetzig (Mike) Hitch; daughter-in-law Carol Headley Wetzig, and Melissa Wetzig; grandchildren J.B. (Betsy) Brand, Laura (Mike) Harrison, Christopher (Angela) Wetzig, Cayley Wetzig, Casey (Brian) Peterson, Natalie Wetzig, Yvonne Wetzig, Daniel Hitch, and Devin Hitch; great-grandchildren Olivia Murray, Jack, Kate, and Will Brand, Ella, Ava and Mia Harrison, Carolyn and Jack Peterson. She is also survived by her nieces Ann Woodward and Robin Stratford; nephews Charles Woodward and Nicholas (Emily) Woodward, Jeff (Linda) Stratford, and her special "adopted family" David and Maryse Moore.
Deen graduated from Dongan Hall-Arden, Staten Island, NY, and Sweet Briar College, Sweet Briar, VA. (Family lore would never let Deen forget that when students at SBC selected features from classmates to compose the perfect face, her nose was chosen). She met her husband Paul, while she was a lab technician at the Marine Hospital on Staten Island. They moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 1953, for Paul to establish his practice in ophthalmology.
Deen led a full life. She enjoyed skiing, tennis, and most of all, she loved golf. (She had a hole-in-one at the Broadmoor). She was a lifelong learner, joining an investment club, being a docent at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, going to golf schools, taking bridge and French lessons, and attending seminars on geology and astronomy. She loved collecting rocks and shells and Torquay Pottery from Totnes, England, where she spent summers as a child. Deen always enjoyed contemporary music, attending a Frank Sinatra concert when she was a teenager, and going to Rod Stewart and Lionel Richie concerts when she was in her nineties. Deen didn't miss a beat. Her wit and intellect were a constant for 97 years.
Deen loved her pets: Snoopy, Wolfie, Fat Cat, Rimsky and Emma. She was a devoted supporter of the Humane Society. Deen belonged to the Broadmoor Golf Club, Cheyenne Mountain Country Club, Garden of the Gods - Kissing Camels Club, and the Pueblo Country Club. She loved sitting on her back porch, spending time at her beloved red-roof house, and watching Roger Federer play tennis. But most of all she loved being with family and friends. Deen had a special gift for relating to everyone and making them feel comfortable and welcomed. She was so grateful for her special friends over the years and would always relate stories of the many wonderful memories they shared.
Deen felt fortunate to have explored the world through multiple trips with her husband, children, and grandchildren. She had especially fond memories of all the trips with their dear friends Dr. Ed and Mary Norton and family.
Deen was actively and happily involved with the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She took the time to make each and every one feel loved by being with them, devoting endless hours writing cards to them, and sending special gifts for every occasion. Family Christmas traditions were especially important to her. Four generations benefited from this aspect of her legacy. Deen will be remembered for her class, grace, unwavering strength, and for her love for her family.
The family would like to thank Deen's helpers and Hospice for their care and compassion. A private interment at Evergreen Cemetery is planned. A private celebration of life is also planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, 610 Abbot Lane, Colorado Springs, CO 80905,
