Doris Elaine Caine (nee Johnson) was born on October 11, 1932 in Longmont, Colorado. She passed away on October 10, 2024 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, just a day short of her 92nd birthday. She showed her exceptional abilities early in life, first at Longmont High School and then at Colorado A & M (later CSU), excelling both academically and in extracurricular activities. She was a drum major, tennis player, celloist, and artist. She also served as the president of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, remaining active with the Thetas throughout her life. She graduated summa cum laude in 1954 and earned a post-graduate fellowship to the New York Institute of Art and Design for fashion design. She later earned two Masters' Degrees, one in Counseling and one in Education and served as a legislative assistant for Senator Chuck Grassley.
Doris met the love of her life, Philip D. Caine, in high school and married him on August 1, 1954. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in August and had three daughters who are all outstanding women in their own right. She and Phil loved to travel and took a number of cruises with destinations throughout the world. She remained a dedicated Air Force spouse throughout Phil's 37-year career. A woman of faith, Doris was active in church her entire life.
Doris was a life-long educator, having served as a home economics teacher and counselor at Irving Junior High School, the Dean of Students and an assistant principal at Doherty High School, and the principal of Coronado High School, the first female high school principal in District 11. She also was the District 11 Charter School Coordinator. In these capacities, she was known as a fair, tireless educator, with high expectations for both students and staff. Her dedication and exemplary guidance helped to push innumerable students and educators to reach their potential.
Doris was an exceptionally talented artist, having several one-man art shows with her artwork currently hanging throughout the world. She was also a talented potter, seamstress, floral arranger, interior designer, architectural designer, and jewelry designer with pieces sold throughout Santa Fe and the West. Most recently, she demonstrated her artistic passion by creating one-of-a-kind cards for her family and friends, which are works of art in themselves. Doris will long be remembered as one of the most creative individuals ever to grace the Colorado landscape.
In addition to her educational and creative pursuits, Doris was a role model for her three daughters, showing them that they could accomplish anything to which they set their minds. In a time when many females did not go to college, much less work full-time, Doris demonstrated that she could have an exceptional career of her own, while being a dedicated mother and Air Force spouse.
She is survived by her husband, BGen (ret) Phil Caine, daughters Barb Wagenfuhr (Kolin) of Colorado Springs, Ginny Caine Tonneson (Larry) of Carefree, Arizona, and Jenny Caine (Mike Lyle) of Carlsbad, California. In addition, she had five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She will be sorely missed. A memorial service will be held for her at the Monument Community Presbyterian Church on October 25 at 10:30 a.m. followed by an interment at the Air Force Academy cemetery.

I will always remember Doris for the inspiration, the mentor (for women especially), and the inspiration and friend that she was. I worked with Doris in several capacities over the years in District Eleven and saw her in many roles. She was always a leader and very professional in her approach to anything she was involved with. She will be missed as a lifetime educator and friend!
"Well done good and faithful servant."
My sincere condolences to her husband, Phil and her family.

I knew Mrs. Caine first at Doherty High School as a guidance counselor where she encouraged me to pursue my interests and helped me with college applications. Later, as a young woman married to a 1st Lt teaching at the Air Force Academy she was a role model of balancing career, marriage and family, and AF spouse obligations. This was in the early 80s when there were not many nonmilitary wives with careers. I followed a similar path as Mrs. Caine, traveling the world with my active duty husband, teaching where I could, before ending my career as an elementary school administrator. Thank you for your support Mrs. Caine.

I knew Doris slightly through her work in District 11 and admired her tremendously. She made it look easy and it never was.
