Doris Miller Obituary

Doris M. Miller passed away quietly in Colorado Springs, Colorado on December 6th, 2003. Doris was born in Saguache, Colorado on January 8, 1923 to Sheldon and Frances Dilley. She was raised in Saguache, graduated from Saguache County High School in 1941, and served her country in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946 during World War II. Graduated from the University of Denver,(BA), (1946), and Colorado College, (MA), (1966). She married Cecil R. Lyon in 1946. They raised three children: Robert Sheldon, James Matthew and Leslie Jo. She taught kindergarten and the first grade in District 11, in Colorado Springs for over 20 years. She married Marion HJ Miller in 1986. Preceded in passing by her parents, Sheldon and Frances Dilley; husbands: Cecil Lyon and Marion Miller, and daughter Leslie. Survived by sons: Robert Lyon of Draper, Utah and James Scarlett-Lyon of Seattle; grandchildren: Nicholas Lyon, Stephanie Cromar, Cedar Scarlett-Lyon, Janette Walker, Jennifer Burnham, Aaron Ritter; and four great grandchildren. Doris's parents instilled a deep love of family, friends, and the outdoors. Doris was at home in the mountains hiking, camping or just out for a ride. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Colorado Springs, active in Alpha Xi Delta sorority and other civic organizations. She loved to entertain friends and family with her excellent culinary skills. The family would also like to express deep gratitude and appreciation to the staff of Namaste in Colorado Springs. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 16, 2005 between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. at Swan-Law Funeral Home, 501 North Cascade, in Colorado Springs. A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 17, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. in the Lehmberg Chapel of First United Methodist Church at 420 North Nevada, Colorado Springs, Colorado. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery in Saguache. In lieu of flowers the family would prefer a donation to The Saguache County Museum, The Saguache United Methodist Church, The Pikes Peak Alzheimer's Association, Pikes Peak Hospice or an organization of your choice. To quote one of Doris's lifelong friends, "With Doris you were always a friend."
