Dorothy moved to Colorado Springs from Bennett, Colorado in 1935 where she and husband, Charles Bishop worked at the Pine Valley Dairy on what is now part of the Air Force Academy. She attended Flowers' Beauty School from 1947-1948 then owned and operated a beauty shop in old Colorado City from 1948-1952. She then owned and operated A&W Root Beer stands in Canon City and Manitou Springs from 1952-1962. In 1957 she was involved in the startup of Buckskin Joe near the Royal Gorge where she owned and operated a gift shop specializing in copper ware. When she sold the root beer stands, she bought a small apartment house and took a job with Western Beauty Supply in Colorado Springs where she eventually became manager. She retired in 1975. Dorothy was a long term member of the Columbine Chapter of ABWA and was named Woman of the year in 1975, served on many committees and was president for a year. After retiring, she was a devoted volunteer to Goodwill Industries for 11 years and received many letters and awards noting her contributions of time and work. She also volunteered her cosmetology services to patients in nursing homes and to her many friends and neighbors. A member of First United Methodist Church since 1945, she remained a faithful attendee until she could no longer drive, but watched Sunday services on TV. She loved family reunions, dancing, fishing and traveling, but her main passion was for bridge games and family poker. In the last decade, she wrote several stories about her younger years that were published in The Prairie Times. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends who were fortunate to share these activities with her. Her interment will be at Memorial Gardens, following services on July 10th at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 9 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Chapel. In lieu of flowers, she would have wished for donations to Goodwill Industries or Silver Key. Please visit www.mem.com and sign the guest book.

Dear Carol and your family, I'm so sadended to hear of Dorothy's passing. I'm glad I had the chance to meet her, although I don't have the years of memories like all of you do. She was a very strong woman, and I admire the way she always bounced right back after her many injuries. And she was a delight to talk to. I know she will surely be missed. But she's in glory with the Lord now, and what a comfort that is! Love in Him

Loving Granddaughter

July 9, 2009

The loss of one of the most beautiful, caring, and compassionate women of my life is hard to bear. My Grandma Dorothy’s death is the cause of so much sorrow just as her life has been the cause such delight. Her stories, her care giving, her 4 a.m. worrying, will be missed along with her pies, her card games, and her dime-store gifts. She started this whole thing we call family and as a proud matriarch, has gone to get ready for us there. She is telling everyone how she adores her talks with Josh; that she bursts with pride over Chris; how she is so in love with Grace; so inspired by Marie; so captivated by Ashley’s beauty; and so charmed by Nina’s sweetness. She is baking, setting a table (way too early) and getting the cards shuffled. She’ll be waiting to meet us and kiss us at the door.
