Douglas Keefer Obituary

Douglas Hobart Keefer went home to be with his Lord on February 21, 2012 in Ft. Worth, Texas. He was born July 23, 1935 in Baltimore, Maryland to William Hobart and Florence Keefer. Doug earned a B.S. in Chemistry from the Univ. of Maryland in 1958, an M.S. in Nuclear Physics from the Univ. of Miami in 1968, another M.S. from the Univ. of Texas at Dallas in 1975, and a Ph.D. from UTD in Environmental Science/Nuclear Physics in 1976. He was in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve from 1952-1958 and graduated from Officer's Training School at the Coast Guard Academy in 1959. Doug entered the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Officer Corps in 1959, retiring at the rank of Commander in 1979. Dr. Keefer was one of the original members of the Environmental Protection Agency, and received a Presidential Letter of Commendation in 1965 for his work on radiation in American milk supplies resulting from above ground nuclear testing. Doug received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior in 1970. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Douglas Keefer was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Darla Misener Keefer of Ft. Worth, TX; daughter Heather (Christopher) John of Highlands Ranch, CO, daughter Noelle (Rex) Nelson of Bowie, MD, son Christopher (Shellie) Keefer of Ft. Worth, TX, and daughter Katharine (Michael) Taylor of Katy, TX. He is also survived by his brother Dr. Donald (Mandy) Keefer of Lutherville, MD., eight grandchildren and 1 great-grandson. Services will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at FBC, Poolville, TX, with Rev. Christopher Keefer officiating. Interment with full military honors at DFW National Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.

I am very sorry to hear about Doug. I had not seen him for a long time, but remember him as a fine Christian husband and father. I hope you find comfort in the Apostle Paul's words that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

I am so sorry that Dick and I cannot be there with all of you today. We feel honored to have known Doug and what a blessing he was to his family and the grandchildren. I know that the grandchildren that we share really loved their Papa. Thankfully we will see him again.
