Douglas VanAllen Obituary

Van Allen
Douglas "Doug" F.
Van Allen
January 20, 1940
August 2, 2022

Doug lost his valiant battle with mesothelioma, and the world lost a quiet, loving soul.
Doug was born in Rochester, NY, to Dorethea (Dubie) and Harvey Van Allen. After high school, he worked briefly at Kodak Park until joining the U.S. Air Force Aviation Cadet Program in 1959. After his commissioning as a 2nd Lieutenant and an Aeronautical Rating of Navigator, he was assigned to Homestead Air Force Base, FL, as a Boeing B-52H Stratofortress strategic bomber crew member.
His entire operational career was with the Strategic Air Command in intelligence and operational reconnaissance with assignments at Kadena AB, Okinawa, Japan; Hellenikon AB, Greece and several tours at Offutt AFB, NE. He met his wife, Mary, at Offutt in 1971, and they married Nov. 4, 1972. He retired from the Air Force in June 1980.
The family moved to Monument, CO, and Doug worked a second career with Martin Marietta (now Lockheed Martin) as a Program Planner for numerous programs. His second retirement was in July 2002.
He was a skilled woodworker and an avid wildlife photographer. He volunteered with the American Red Cross, deploying in Colorado as well as Texas, Louisiana, New York, Arizona, Florida and Georgia. He also worked with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA), providing free tax preparation to the local community.
Doug was predeceased by his parents and the entire former generation of his family. He is survived by his wife, Mary, daughters Elizabeth Van Allen, Jean (Terry) Duggan, Lisa (Jacob) Bowers, brother Harvey (Karen), grandchildren Celia and Adelyn Bowers, plus beloved nieces, cousins, and great-nephews.
Services will be held on Tuesday, August 9 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 55 Jefferson St., Monument, CO: 9:30 am visitation, 10 am Rosary, 10:30 am Mass, 11:30 a.m. reception at the Parish Ministry Center, Interment at 2 pm at Pikes Peak National Cemetery, 10545 Drennan Rd., Colorado Springs, CO. "Major" VanAllen took a half dozen brand new junior NCO's (myself included) and shaped them into Intelligence professionals. Several of us went on to 20+ year USAF careers as well. I learned a lot from him. I only had a couple of bosses in my career that I respected as much.
