Dwight Brothers Obituary

Dwight was born May 3, 1929, in Sterling, Kansas, to Irving and Blanche Brothers. The youngest of three children, Dwight and the family moved to western Kansas, where he attended elementary school in Syracuse and worked on the family wheat farm. When Dwight was in high school, the family moved part-time to Colorado Springs.

Dwight was an outstanding athlete and student. He attended Colorado College, where he excelled academically and played varsity football. He was awarded a Fulbright for study abroad and admission to Princeton University's Department of Economics PhD program. While studying abroad in Bristol, England, Dwight met Sue, who was also studying in Bristol and would become his wife of 70 years.

After earning his PhD from Princeton, Dwight embarked on an academic career, initially taking him to Rice University in Houston, where he became chair of the Economics Department. After Rice, Dwight moved to Harvard University, serving in the Development Advisory Service and the Department of Economics as a Professor of Economics at the Harvard Business School.

Dwight's field was monetary policy in developing nations, and he is the author of several works in that field, including an early book on Mexican economic development. He took pleasure in mentoring some of the next generation of Mexican economists and helping to advance their careers.

After his successful stint at Harvard, Sue and Dwight decided to embark on a second career, putting his academic interest into practice in a number of countries. He served as a primary advisor to the Ministers of Finance of Kenya, then Botswana, for twenty years.

Dwight also served, at various times, on the faculties of Yale, and his alma mater, Colorado College. He was proud to have been a Trustee of Colorado College and even more proud to have been inducted into the Colorado College Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the class of 1950 Rocky Mountain Conference Champion football team.

In addition to his academic and professional pursuits, Dwight and his father, Irving, established the Brothers Ranch in Brazoria County, Texas. Dwight operated the cattle ranch from his first years at Rice for many decades until it was sold to the Trust for Public Lands in the early 2000s and incorporated into the San Bernard Wildlife Refuge.

Dwight and Sue retired to Colorado, splitting their time between Colorado Springs and Westcliffe.

Dwight was predeceased in 2022 by Sue. Dwight is survived by his three children, four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

When Donald I arrived in Colorado Springs seven years ago, we were so lucky to become friends with Sue and Dwight; Sue reached out to me after they attended a lecture I gave at CC about Hidcote Manor, a garden in England not far from where she and Dwight met - the note she left for me said, "we must meet...". We did and over a glass of wine, bonded with memories of England.
Sue was a wonderful hostess, and with Dwight as her aide-de-camp, we celebrated various excuses for a party at their Westcliffe house, and at Kissing Camels. Most memorable was 4 July, 2019; I stood at the edge of their garden to better watch the lavish fireworks, put on by KC´s HOA, fill the sky. Dwight came up, put his arm across my shoulders and so we stood like two kids, enraptured by the show. It ended, and Dwight in his usual dry way, said, "Hell, if they put on a show like that next year, I´ll be a lot happier about paying the fees." Then Covid...the rest is now history.
Dwight and Sue shared with us the story of their romance (Dwight saying how lucky he was to have found Sue...she rolling her eyes), and landmarks in their full and long life together For all that and so much else we will cherish their memory.
