Earl Asbury Obituary

He was born May 31, 1924 in O'Fallon, Illinois, son of Earl Sr. and Josephine Asbury. He attended Blackburn College, then served three years in the Marine Corps, coming out in 1946 as a second lieutenant. He married Sara (Sally) Carstens in 1945. They had one son, Timothy, who was editor of the Estes Park Trail Gazette for 26 years. Tim passed away in 2004 at age 55. Earl graduated in journalism from University of Illinois. He was circulation manager of the Pontiac, Illinois Leader; a reporter on the Bloomington, Illinois Pantagraph; and a reporter on the St. Louis Globe Democrat. Earl and Sally owned and operated the Bent County Democrat weekly newspaper at Las Animas, Colorado from 1952 to 1968. The University of Colorado named Earl “Outstanding Colorado Editor in 1961 and the newspaper won the CU “Community Service Award several years. While in Las Animas, he served a term as President of the Chamber of Commerce and a term as City Councilman. They moved to Colorado Springs where Earl was a stockbroker with Boettcher & Co. from 1968 to 1991, when he retired. They didn't take any vacation for the first seven years they owned the Las Animas newspaper, then resolved to take one every year, and they've traveled overseas once each year since 1959, visiting a total of 115 countries worldwide. Earl's main interests in addition to travel have been following conservative politics and tennis. He felt that he lived in the best country in the world during its every best era. Earl is survived by his wife, Sally; three grandchildren: Jill (Jeff) Black and great granddaughters: Keira and Kyler of Windsor; Kathleen Asbury of Fort Collins and John Asbury of Riverside, California: a brother, James Asbury of Longview, Texas; and a sister, Mrs. Mary Lou Fochtmann of St. Louis. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 8 at the Shrine of Remembrance “America the Beautiful Chapel, with a reception to follow. Private interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

Dear Sal, John, Kate and Jill,
My loving sympathy to all of you. I am so thankful that we had the reunion last June and that Earl talked me into coming. I had the nicest conversation with him. And I am so sorry for his continued disabilities. I am sorry that I could not be there with you at this time. My love to all, Cousin Jody

I had the pleasure of working with Earl at Boettcher & Co. in Colorado Springs. He always had smile and a minute to stop and say hello - even when he was rushing out to play tennis.

I've worked in newspapers for 30 years, most recently at the Rocky Mountain News and the Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale, after growing up in Las Animas inspired by the local journalism that appeared in the Bent County Democrat while Earl Asbury was editor. He was truly an inspiration.

I remember Earl very well from my high school & college days when I lived in Las Animas. I will always remember him as a very fine person who truly cared about his community.

Coincidentally, my wife and I published the Pike View Farmer at Simla from 1952 through 1965. I will always remember Earl as one of the most honest and sincere journalists I have ever met. He is a credit to the profession.
