As a squadron commander in the 48th TFW, I served under General Bracken. I was from Troy and always impressed by his leadership and flying ability. The last time we were together was when he visited us at our lake house on Lake George in NY. It was really great to see him again and share memories together.

Sorry I missed the day. You all planned it just as he wanted. What wonderful 12 years I work for you Dad. We had a lot of laughs and enjoyed our Air Force sports. I miss hearing all colorful stories.

photo of us chipping burned slash in 2015 at a Black Forest Together cleanup day. BFT was an amazing grassroots effort to recover at the 2013 fire that devastated so much of the forest and did not qualify for any federal funding since it started on private property. Ed and Nancy helped wrangle volunteers and equipment in this seemingly insurmountable devastation. I am grateful for all I learned from both of them and all the other BFT organizers who shared so much of their energy and time.

One of the best Wing Commanders I ever had the honor of serving under.

I only got to fly once with Big Ed, on 8 February 1982. As a young WSO (~150 hours in the F-111F), I was hoping to make a good impression on the big boss. And then the INS broke--and panic and confusion reigned in the right seat. Fortunately, the left seat knew where we were and where we were going, so the only casualty was my pride! After we landed, Col. Bracken hooked me up with Steve von Schmittou who got me up to speed on the INS and what to do when it (fairly often) failed. Ed Bracken was a great leader who earned the respect of everyone who had the honor of working for him.
