Edward Daugs Obituary

Edward "Ed" H
Daugs
December 5, 1931
August 1, 2023

Edward H. Daugs (Ed) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, passed away on August 1, 2023 in his home surrounded by family. Born December 5, 1931, in Correctionville, Iowa to Reverend Harold L. and Ora A. (Klinge) Daugs. Ed grew up in a family of five brothers, including older brothers Harold and Kenneth, who preceded him in death, and younger twin brothers Dennis and Daryl, who survive.

His family moved to Walla Walla, Washington in 1948, where Ed graduated from WaHigh High School as the quarterback of the state champion football team in 1949/50. This led to a football scholarship to Pacific Lutheran College in Tacoma, Washington. On August 29, 1954, he married his high school sweetheart and life-long love, Bernice Eleanor Bruhjell. Ed graduated from Oregon State University with a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering and began his career at Sandia National Laboratory, Livermore, California as the first college hire for this new national laboratory.
Ed worked in the nuclear defense industry for his entire career, helping to keep our country safe. He joined Kaman Nuclear (later Kaman Sciences) in Colorado Springs as a research scientist in 1967, where he played a vital role in the development of strategic systems for the US Navy, including the Polaris, Poseidon, and Trident submarine-launched missile programs. He retired in 1996 as Senior Vice President.

A devout Christian, Ed was a long time member of First Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs. An exceptional athlete, Ed won amateur golf, bowling and tennis tournaments and was an avid skier. He shared his love of the outdoors with his family and friends with numerous fishing, camping, backpacking, and skiing adventures.

Ed is survived by Bernice, his wife of 68 years, children Janine (Steve) Work of Port Orchard, Washington, Edward D. (Shari) Daugs of Midland, Michigan, and Karen (Donald) Gardner of Colorado Springs, Colorado, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at First Lutheran Church, 1515 North Cascade Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado on September 15, 2023 at 1:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, make a memory tribute to the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association (www.cmtausa.org), dedicated to Edward H. Daugs.

I am so sorry for your loss. The Rudy siblings (offspring of Bill and Shirley and Bill with his first wife) were just talking about how our parents used to travel together, play bridge and golf too. Our fathers shared such a parallel history. I know your dad will be greatly missed, there is not a day that passes I don't think about mine. We still carry on the Rudy family tradition of camping, hiking and fishing at Twin Lakes. Please know that our thoughts are with you on behalf of Bill and Shirley.

Ed hired me in 1969 and mentored me before mentoring was done. He shaped who I was as a manager and who I am now as a person. He set a wonderful example for me of how to live.

According to our father, by all accounts, Ed was a "hell-of-a" great friend and business colleague. They shared an accomplished career together at Kaman Sciences. We had the opportunity to meet Ed and Bernice at various social gatherings and know he will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with you at this time.

Bernice, I was saddened to learn of Ed's passing. He was a good friend to me during my years at Kaman Sciences. When I worked on the East coast, Ed and I spoke on the phone almost every morning discussing business and every day issues. I remember vividly visiting Toronto to see the Phantom of the Opera with you and Ed and my wife Nancy. Great memories. May he rest in peace.
