Edward Kelbel Obituary

Edward Paul Kelbel, Jr. age 52 (passed away March 28, 2012) Ed(ward) was the beloved husband of Rosemary Ann (Breithaupt). Their love filled marriage spanned 28 years. Ed was a loving father to his son Ted, daughter-in law Katie, and daughter Tricia. He is preceded in death by his father, Edward Paul Kelbel Sr, Harbor Springs MI. He is survived by his mother, Mary Lou Kelbel, two brothers and three sisters: Mark (Audrey) Kelbel of Colorado Springs and children Remy, Karris, and John; Pete (Linda) Kelbel of Petoskey MI, and children Mackenzie, Peter, and Grace; Julie (David) Leik of Greensboro, NC and children Cassie, Emily, and Chandler; Sue (Todd) Ortlieb of Petoskey, MI and children Cal and Emma; Mollie (Mark) Carter of Harbor Springs, MI and children Jack & Caroline. Ed recently marked 27 years of membership in the PGA of America. He was employed by the University of Colorado Colorado Springs as the director of Professional Golf Management Program. He truly enjoyed sharing his vast knowledge of golf and the golf business with his students. Prior to moving to Colorado Springs in August of 2006 he had been the General Manager and PGA professional at The Emerald Golf Course in St. Johns, MI. He was instrumental in growing this business for 12 years. He also worked at the Cheboygan Golf and Country Club and Petoskey Bay View Country Club, MI as their golf professional. Ed graduated from Michigan State University in 1981 and received his master's degree from Ferris State University in 1986. At MSU Ed was a varsity golf scholarship letter winner. His high school years were spent at Harbor Springs High School where he was instrumental in establishing the Golf team in 1974. He was both State Champion and a United States All American Golfer in 1976. Additionally, he participated in the baseball and basketball teams and is still listed among the top 10 Harbor Springs Basketball scoring list despite playing before the three point line. There will be memorial events in Colorado Springs and Michigan with visitation planned for Monday, April 2nd at 7PM at St. Paul Catholic Church, 9 El Pomar Road. Catholic Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, April 3rd at 10AM followed by a luncheon in the Julie Penrose Hall at St. Paul's. Ed will be laid to rest at Lakeview Cemetery in Harbor Springs, MI. A scholarship fund will be set up in Ed's Memory to honor students in the UCCS Professional Golf Management Program, details to be available through UCCS. The family encourages masses to be said for the repose of his soul, helping others through random acts of kindness, spreading joy and kindness to those who cross our paths and enjoying the beauty of God's creation that surrounds us.

My condolences to you! I lost my brother last June it will be a year on the 22nd. And I miss him very much. You don't know me but I'm an old friend of Audrey's from Chicago. You might know my nephew from St. Johns Michigan His name is Dan Glowacki, He knows you. Anyway I saw this on face book and I just wanted to say God Bless and comfort you and your family. Sincerely, Gregory Clark

This goes back many years, decades if I'm allowed, to a driveway basketball court. It was me and my brother, Tom O'Rourke, vs. Eddie K and Mike Lavey. I honestly can't remember who won, but we banged it out that day. Afterwards, Eddie told me I had all the skills just keep working hard. He said my "textbook" shooting form would keep me moving in the right direction. I was a 10th grader. Tom told me to listen to Ed because he was a player. Later in life, he took my horrible golf form and moved me in the right direction.
Eddie was a cherished friend to my brother, Tom, and a great guy in my life!
Although we will miss him here on earth, God loves having him come home.

Ed,Rosemary and I were fellow parishioners. I always enjoyed seeing them at Mass and sometimes afterwards, or at the monthly parish breakfast, talking college football, they being Michigan State and my being Alabama. Maybe one day, if I'm lucky and if I'm good, Ed and I can talk college football again in the presence of some football greats. May the perpetual light shine upon you, Ed, and may the gracious Lord comfort Rosemary and your family.

Very sorry to hear the loss of my former boss at The Emerald. A true family man and a great Spartan. He was always so kind when I returned to play The Emerald, even when I just showed up out of nowhere! He always mentioned his family and was tremendously proud of his children.

We never had the pleasure to meet Ed, but we feel like we knew him well. Our daughter had the honor to be an altar server at Ed's funeral today; we hope his family can take some comfort in knowing that someone with significant links to northwest Michigan cared for him today with her administration of the incense during the mass. We were amazed at the numerous common factors we have with him. We lived in DeWitt, had tickets for MSU games, and have vacationed every summer in northern Michigan, including Harbor Springs, Petoskey, and Cheboygan. When we make our annual trip to the Traverse City area this summer, we'll be sure to say a prayer for Ed.

Ed Kelbel was the reason our son Ryan went to UCCS. From the moment we met Ed he was magical in the sense that he made you feel like you belonged and that you had found a home.He was more than just a teacher and mentor. He was a friend and a inspiration! His love of life and positive attitude was always conveyed and passed on to his students. Ryan and his classmates were so fortunate to have had the time they did with Ed and to learn so much from him.
They will go forward with Ed in their hearts and his positive attitude in their heads and change the world a little at a time just like him.
Thank you to the Kelbel family for sharing such a great man with our son.
Thank you Ed for making a difference in this world for Ryan and so many more!

Rosemary, Ted & Katie and Tricia,
Having the pleasure of knowing Ed and having a student currently in his program we are deepley saddened by his passing. His care and devotion to his students and everyone arround him is something we could all strive to emulate. We hope and pray that you find peace and healing in this time of sorrow. A pastor friend of mine told me a saying that helped me thru many times like this: In times like this our hearts ask the question, why? and our faith gives us the answer!

Thank you for sharing Ed with us. He is a remarkable man and will never be forgotten.

Ed you were inspirational to many of today's PGA Golf Professionals and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. You will be missed by many. It was a pleasure working with you and learning from you. Rest in Peace and God bless you and your family.

Ed had so many great jokes and sayings. I think my favorite would include any statement that he started with "Well, in a nutshell." Every time I hear that phrase now, I always have a memory of Ed sharing a story or advice with me. Thank you for all of your hard work and support through the years Ed!
