Edward Overton Obituary

Edward L. Overton, born October 27, 1954, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, February 24, 2006, after suffering a heart attack at age 51. Ed engaged life to the fullest, living up to his nick-name "Fast Eddy." He will be missed for his smile, willingness to help others, and love for his family. Ed left his mark on Colorado Springs and the world after building many custom homes in the area and 11 church buildings overseas. He was founder and president of Overton Construction Company, a company known for bold integrity, quality service and commitment to excellence. Ed faithfully served as a Royal Ranger leader at New Life Church for 13 years, teaching the Bible and outdoor survival skills to young men. Ed loved flying, riding dirt bikes with his sons and close friends, working on his '69 GTO, and going on Royal Ranger outings. Ed was born in Tacoma, Washington and has lived in Colorado Springs since 1965. He graduated from Widefield High School in 1972. He is survived by his wife, Betsy; sons, Kenny, Chris and Stephen; daughter-in-law, Carla; future daughter-in-law, Laurie Susen of New Jersey; parents, Al and Stanley Overton of Fountain; mother-in-law, Ann Stonebraker of Denver; sister, Michael Schiller; brother-in-law, Mark Schiller; niece, Jody Fortuna and son, Debo of New York; aunt and uncle, Glenda and John Kelly of Arizona; and cousins, Kathy Rampy and Tom Kelly of Arizona. A celebration of Ed's life will be held Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at 1:30 P.M. at New Life Church, 11025 Voyager Parkway, Colorado Springs, Colorado. Memorial contributions may be made in Ed's memory to the Ed Overton Memorial Fund at New Life Church.

Dear Overton's:

Ed was the most human of beings I have ever known. Even though I was only lucky enough to spend less than 2 years with your family - way back in the early 70's - we somehow managed to stay connected. During our times of reconnection, I found Ed had grown into a man of integrity - a loving father and devoted husband. My heart aches but I'm told it will heal even though a small hole will remain. Ed touched my life. All my love, memories and thoughts!

In the summer of 1968 on Hillcrest Road in Gulfport, Mississippi, a young Overton family rented a red brick house across from a young Newman family. My little sister Peggy and I played "catch" all summer it seemed with Eddie and his little sister Michael. It was a great summer. The 4 of us had impromptu picnics in neighboring wooded areas; Peggy and I ate peanut butter & banana sandwiches; Michael and Eddie ate pb&p (pickle!!!) sandwiches. We were so sorry to hear of Eddie's death. Van Roland came to my office this past week and told me. We've had no contact with the Overton family since that summer (they may not even remember us) when they moved away, but we remember them clearly and fondly. Eddie was such a kind, thoughtful young fellow. It's not surprising to learn while reading his obituary of his life's values and accomplishments and the respect and admiration that people felt for him. My sister Peggy and I send our very deepest sympathy to all of you and we look forward to meeting Eddie again at Jesus' feet. Surely, there are softballs and gloves in Heaven!

Dear Betsy and Boys:

I still remember Ed at Christian Center and his work with "MOVE". His loving attitude and extreme integrity will not be matched this side of Heaven. Ed always had a smile and encouraging word for me and my family. I remember him directing the boys group on Wednesday evenings when they built dog houses in my garage. Ed leaves a big hole to fill. Betsy, I am keeping you in my prayers. I am so sorry you lost your life mate, he was such a good guy. I can see him working for God building Mansions in Heaven.

Sincerely,

Sandie Claus

Betsy, may the Lord hold you closely and give you peace as you are seperated from your very best friend for a short time. Our children attended CSCS together and our memories of your family are ones of a loving father and mother who exhibited true strength and faith in the Lord. May the Lord bless you and your family.

Dear Mrs. Overton and family,

I worked for Ed every summer during my high school years (83-86). Ed was very influential in my life and demonstrated integrity, love and great concern for the people that worked for him. We met your family while at Christian Center. I pray that God gives you great comfort in knowing the man that Ed was, and his great influence on many. What a legacy he left in his passionate relationship with Jesus. Grace and peace to you all.

Dear Betsy and family, We will always remember Ed for his generosity. He really helped us make the transition to the mission field when I asked if I could work for him (he had to show me how to hold a hammer!) yet be free to travel to raise our support. We are praying for you and want to see you when we are in the Springs again later this year.

It has been many years since I last saw Eddie, but I will always remember him as a fun-loving "kid". Although I never knew him as an adult...knowing his Mom & Dad & sister and all the wonderful things they told me about him, I know Eddie had to have been a great man. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

5 years after constructing my parents home in Woodland Park, the Hyman fire broke out. Ed called them and offered to have my parents and their belongs move to safety at his home. What a wonder gesture from a wonderful man. May the Lord grant his family peace at this difficult time.

We were very fortunate to have met Ed and his family in 1995 while he was building our home. We got to know him and his partner John very well and it is just heartbreaking to know that both of these fine men are no longer with us. We want to express our deepest sympathies at this time and want the families of both men to know they will be part of our lives forever everytime we walk into our home. We know they are home too!

Billy the Kid, I will miss you more than you know...nevermind, I'll tell you how much I miss you in Heaven. You have been like a brother from another mother to me. Your smile and joking around, your encouragement, your attitude toward life, your way of helping others, your zest for Lake Powell, and your choice to choose Jesus as your best friend will always be cherished and remembered. May God bless your wonderful family and may they follow in your footsteps to love mercy and walk humbly with their God.

Dear Betsy and Boys, We were so very sorry to hear of Ed's death. Larry always enjoyed visiting with him about house building whenever we were at ballgames together. My husband doesn't find visiting with others easy--he's a pretty shy guy, but Ed always made it work. He was such a likeable man. You and your sons mean a lot to me. I always enjoyed having them in class, and you were always such a support and encouragement. The one thing I can promise you is that Larry and I will be praying for all of you in the days to come. You will continue to be in our hearts and thoughts. Much love, Larry & Carol
