Lucas Jr.
EDWIN L. LUCAS JR.
August 27, 1934 October 27, 2018
Edwin L. Lucas Jr., age 84, passed away on October 27, 2018.
A proud Texas native, Ed Lucas was born to Edwin L. Lucas Sr. and Jimmie Mar (Thompson) Lucas in Uvalde, Texas on August 27, 1934. He was the great grandson to the famed Texan, Joseph Grigsby Smyth (1847-1915) of Uvalde, Texas who was a veteran of the American Civil War, prominent rancher and member of the Texas state house of representatives. He was also the great-great grandson to George Washington Smyth (1806-1866), one of the signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence.
While still a child, Ed's father moved the family to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he graduated high school in 1953. That same year Ed joined the US Air Force and the following year he married his high school sweetheart, Edith Ann Cambridge. He was given an honorable discharge from the Air Force in 1957.
Ed received his Bachelors of Science in Wood Technology from Colorado State University in 1961 and Master Degree in Economics at Iowa State University in 1967. He embarked on a highly distinguished career with the US Forest Service during which time he was the author and researcher of numerous wood science research projects and publications at the US Wood Products Marketing Laboratory in Princeton, West Virginia. He retired in 1981.
In 1983 Ed and his family returned to Colorado where he successfully owned and operated a family business in Canon City.
Upon returning to Colorado, Ed and Edith Ann spent much of their free time traveling in their 5th wheel across the State of Colorado and the U.S.A. with their grandchildren.
Ed found time to be active in local projects and community groups. He was a member and past Exalted Ruler of the Princeton, West Virginia Elks Lodge #1459, member of the Canon City Elks Lodge #610, an active member of Bass Masters Association, and he also officiated many high school football games in Princeton.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Carl B. Lucas.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Edith Ann; children, Deborah L. (Andrew) Fusco of Morgantown, West Virginia, LTC David C. (Roberta) Lucas, US Army (Ret.) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jon Edwin Lucas of Canon City, Colorado and Jan M. Jacobi of Park Rapids, Minnesota; grandchildren, Matthew J.
