Elizabeth (Betsy) Harris Evans died after a short illness on May 9, 2022 at the age of 96. Betsy was born in Phoenix, Arizona on November 9, 1925 to David Ernest Harris and Alice Foushee, both residents of Phoenix. Her parents were pioneers to Phoenix, Arizona Territory in the late 19th century.

Betsy graduated from Phoenix Union High School in 1943, where she was active in student government, and from the University of Arizona, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree in 1947. At U of A, Betsy was a member of Gamma Phi Beta and danced with and was president of the Orchesis modern dance company.

After college, Betsy worked at West High School and Mountain States Bell in Phoenix and Colorado Springs, CO in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

She met her future husband, John Henry Evans III, in college and they were married on November 25, 1953, in Phoenix. Together their lives were enriched and blessed with 4 children, Carolyn Ann Evans of Aurora CO, Marion Kae Evans Johnson of Clinton IN, John Henry Evans IV of Denver, CO, and Timothy Harris Evans of Pensacola, FL. She was active in Girl and Boy Scouts, the St. Petersburg Science Center, and other volunteer organizations.

After living in Arizona, Texas, Illinois, California, and Florida, Betsy and John moved to Colorado Springs, where Betsy was supervising librarian at the Old Colorado City branch library for almost 20 years. Upon her retirement, Betsy volunteered at the Old Colorado City Historical Society when it opened in 1997 for another decade.

Preceding her in death were her husband John, and her brothers Clinton Orville Harris and Donald Foushee Harris. She is survived by her 4 children, daughters-in-law Karen M. Evans and Karen S. Evans, 4 grandchildren, Zachary Harris Evans, John Henry Evans V, Luke Samuel Evans, and Logan Walter Evans, a nephew, David Lee Harris, and her brother Don's partner, Dan Monachino.

Memorial services will be held in Colorado Springs at a later date. Burial will be in Uniondale Cemetery in Pennsylvania, alongside her husband, at a future date.

Donations to The Denver Hospice or to another hospice of the donor's choice in lieu of flowers is appreciated.

The Old Colorado City Historical Society sends condolences to the family, and many friends, of Betsy Evans. She was respected by everyone. All the years that she volunteered, keeping our books and balance sheets straight, she always had a big smile and happy continence. More recently, volunteers recalled that same smile as she attended Friday programs. Her impact on the successful beginnings of OCCHS will long be remembered and her influence upon the history of Old Colorado City will be appreciated long into the future.
Sincerely,
Barbara T. Sweat

Betsy was a sweetheart and a wonderful Branch Representative at the Old Colorado City PPLD library. It was an honor and a pleasure to know her and be her colleague. Heaven has a new angel!

Betsey was the librarian when I was a child in Old Colorado City. We would ride our bikes to the library every week. She introduced me to the Chronicles of Narnia. Condolences.

Dear Betsy, I am so sorry to hear that you are gone from this world. You were a warm, friendly, kind and inspiring supervisor to me at the library for a number of years and gave me so much encouragement. The patrons and Friends of the Old Colorado City Branch Library loved you deeply and I know you loved them. To Carolyn, Marion, John and Tim, your Mom was an amazing woman who lived a long and full life. My heart goes out to you and all your family.
