Jayne was born in St. Joseph, MO to Ellsworth H. and Dixie M. (Gardner) Readel on January 21, 1931. She graduated from Lafayette High School in 1948. Jayne was raised with her parents, grandparents and older brother in her grandparents' drug store, Gardner's Drugs. The family lived above the store, which was open for 69 years.
On November 22, 1952, she married James Patrick Sullivan, CSM (Ret.), and they moved to Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. Jayne and Pat had two children, both of whom were born at Ft. Leonard Wood. Over the course of Pat's 25-year Army career, the family lived In Missouri, Taiwan, Arizona and Germany. Jayne lived in Colorado Springs for 53 years.
Aside from her family, other highlights in Jayne's life include working at the Chicago Tribune, seeing Joe DiMaggio play baseball, meeting Madam Chiang Kai-shek, trips to Hong Kong, Spain and Gibraltar, a 7-day voyage across the Atlantic to Germany, a tour of the Football Hall of Fame after John Elway's induction, and riding the cable car to the top of The Zugspitze (the highest mountain in Germany). Jayne was also a breast cancer survivor.
Jayne served as the president of the NCO Wives Club in Heidelberg and at Ft. Carson. She was president of the PTA, a Cub Scout den mother, and a homeroom mother when Steve and Kelly were in elementary school. Jayne was active in Al-Anon. She served on the El Paso County Parks Advisory Board, and was very involved in local politics for many years; she was a staunch Republican.
Jayne is predeceased by her parents, husband, and her brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Helen Readel. She is survived by her son, Steve Sullivan (Kathy); her daughter, Kelly Chowanec (Paul); grandchildren, Dan Sullivan (Jessica), Alicia Arntson (Tyler); great grandson, Liam Sullivan, and nephew, Steve Readel, (Marti).
Jayne's memorial service will be held at the Chapel at Memorial Gardens, 3825 Airport Rd., Colorado Springs on Thursday, September 1, 2022 at 2:00 pm, followed by a reception.
