Elizabeth (Betty) Tewell was born in Chanute, Kansas and retained an abiding love for her home state despite moving to the Colorado Springs area in 1949 with her husband Charles Tewell (1923-2015). They are survived by their three children, Deborah of Fort Collins, Marcia (Glynn Willett) of Denver, and Gordon (Deb Tewell) of Arvada, and two grandsons, Eamon (Renata Silberblatt) of Brooklyn, NY, and Conor of Denver.
Betty's love of books enriched her life. It was a passion she shared with others as a librarian at Pikes Peak Elementary and Eagleview Middle Schools.
Words and grammar were very important to her. In the 1950s and 60s, as a member of the Colorado Springs Contest Club, she won many skill contests by writing jingles, naming new products, completing contest phrases, or telling the judges in 25 words or less why she loved their product.
She was, as they say, "sharp-minded to the end," and it was her recent habit to host "book and champagne parties," so she could give her books to invited guests.
Her sense of adventure took her hot air ballooning over Africa, a life-long dream. When she was in her 80s, she tried zip-lining and enjoyed a trip to Alaska, where she tried sea kayaking.
Betty was a dedicated friend whose humor, and intellect are her legacy to those who knew her.
She did not want a memorial or Celebration of Life, preferring to "celebrate life" while she was living, which she did! Memorial donations can be made in her name to The Jane Goodall Society, www.janegoodall.org, the National Geographic Society, www.nationalgeographicsociety.org, or the Adams County Animal Shelter, https://www.animalshelter.adcogov.org/, , where she adopted her treasured feline friend, Sunny.

I send my sincere condolences to Betty's family. I loved her like a second mother and she was always so caring and kind to me. She organized a beautiful luncheon at The Margarita at Pine Creek in Colorado Springs in October, 2019 and many of her closest friends and both of her daughters attended. I felt honored to be part of the group and it was so wonderful to be in Betty's aura of beauty and grace. I will miss her dearly and will cherish the wonderful memories that she made for me.
