Elsie Stevens Obituary

On December 4, 2012, angels took Elsie Stevens to her next life in the Universe. She was born to Julius and Hedwig Bauer in Duesseldorf, Germany, in November 1921. They immigrated to Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1928. The parents worked hard and studied English and Civics and became citizens. Elsie learned the language from her schoolmates - enough to skip half the first and fourth grades. She attended Indiana University and took flying lessons. She was selected for further pilot training by the Women's Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). They were disbanded in 1944. Then she was employed by Headquarters, European Command, in Frankfurt, Germany, and later in Heidelberg for two years. There she met Capt. Kenneth Stevens and they wed in 1950. She worked at the Pentagon until their three treasured children began arriving. An Army family, they moved 25 times, including two tours in Germany. Retiring in Colorado Springs in 1973, they never moved again. Col. Stevens predeceased her in 2003. Elsie loved hiking in the mountains with her hiking group of 25 years. She also enjoyed skiing, gardening, and volunteering at the Olympic Training Center. She was a swimmer - undefeated in 20 years of competition in the Colorado State Games. She also competed in National Senior Olympic Games. She is survived by Robin of New York City, Eric of Colorado Springs, and Lisa of Portland, Oregon. At her request, no service will be held. If desired, Pikes Peak Hospice can be remembered.

Dear Robin, Lisa and Eric,
I remember your mother and father well from Fort Monroe and the "old days". Your mother remained a close friend to my mother and she really was a role model for my mother. Your mother wrote such a warm letter to me after my mother passed earlier this year.
I am sorry for your loss. I wish you comfort and strength in this difficult time.
Sincerely,
Ingrid Stilson Tyson

Robin,
I see where you got half of your good looks from (your father was a nice looking man too) and your indomitability! May she rest in peace
