Eric J. Poelman Obituary

As a young boy, Eric Poelman used to play a game with his brothers where they tried to hit each other with apples. He excelled. "He was a marksman when he was 11," said his brother, Greg. Poelman, 21, of Racine, Wis., was killed June 5 when a bomb exploded near his vehicle in Baghdad. He was based at Fort Carson. Poelman, who enjoyed football and paintball, smiled all the time, but his brother said the family never saw him happier than when he married Renate Klema. "He was with his true love, his only love," Andy Poelman said. Poelman was home-schooled in high school and joined the Army to serve his country and get more experience operating big equipment like bulldozers and cranes. It was his second tour of duty in Iraq. He always told his brothers to finish strong in sports and in life. "Eric, I'm so proud of you because you finished strong," Andy Poelman said.

To the family of Spc. Eric Poelman,
Every year our church has a Gold Star family Christmas tree so that we can pick a star to bring home to hang on our tree so that we are reminded to think and to pray for those who have sacrificed so much. We have prayed for you over this Christmas season and hope that you know Eric has not been forgotten and that your families sacrifices have not been forgotten either.

I did not know Eric nor did I ever meet him, but I still think about him often. My life is very busy hectic and filled with problems to solve and fires to put out or lite under someones butt to get them moving! I own and operate a small body restoration shop in Nebraska and I train young hoodlums to be come skilled talented craftsmen, it wears me down! but seeing the video clip of SPC. Eric Poelman on the news after his death, as I was home relaxing eating a bowl of ice cream, It just hit me at the time that this young man gave his life, and his dreams of working on classic cars as I get to everyday were left unfulfilled. So Every new intern I bring in to the shop to train in the art of classic car restoration they get to learn about Eric Poelman and his dreams and desires to one day have and operate his own shop. I hope it hits them as it did me that even the worst days in like are to be cherished thanks to his family for the DVD of Eric I use it as inspiration for others that I bring in to my shop letting them know about Eric and his great-full service to all Americans,

To the family of Spc. Eric J. Poelman:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.

Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Hello,
I represent PRAYER SHAWLS 4 FALLEN SOLDIERS (PS4FS), an organization that since October 2007 has sent over 2,800 prayer shawls to military families who have lost a loved one. We are an organization of over 240 groups from all over the country. We make every effort to reach families even when post cards are returned after they have moved. Would you kindly send me a contact email/address so that we may send a loving hand-made prayer shawl to the family? Thank you!

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Eric, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Greg And Andy,
Two Years Ago. The sad news hit all of us. once again we are in the holiday season, my condolences go out to you and your parents knowing that Eric wont be here to celeberate xmas with us

August 13, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I am so sorry for your loss. I am originally from Racine, Wisconsin and seeing such a fine young man from my hometown die so young is very sad. I pray for your peace.

June 4, 2007

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

Father we entrust our brother Eric to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Eric in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathy.

We are sorry it took us so long to post an entry for your family member. We are trying to catch up after locating this website. God Bless Legacy.com for allowing us to honor these heros.

We can't imagine what you have been going through since being notified of the death of your young Warrior. The Military and families all over the USA and world are grieving with you and praying for you. What a very brave individual you have in your family that would give up a life for their homeland and its people so they can remain free. Your Freedom Fighter has served the Country above and beyond the call of duty, let no one ever tell you different. With the mission now completed your Warrior has been redeployed to Heaven to sit on the right hand of the Supreme Commander and Chief. The Father above has Eric in his arms and will give him peace as well as eventually easing your pain and suffering. God speed to you and Spc. Eric J. Poelman, our HERO. We are so proud of them that are willing to sacrifice for this great Nation, THANK YOU.

To the family of Spc. Eric J. Poelman:

The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Memorial Day Sunday worship service at 11:00 a.m. on 28 May, 2006. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “What Are We to Remember?” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Respectfully,

Leila Campbell

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

I was shocked to read this notice while surfing around on the internet and could not just let this notice pass me by as if it had no effect on me, I had to stop to say something. Renate, I am deeply sorry for the loss of someone I know that you had loved SO much. We never really imagine that the war will get this close to us, but I am grateful for Eric's service to our country and his fight for our future. My deepest condolences to you, Renate, as well as Eric's family.

August 19, 2005

Unfortunately I never had a chance to really meet Eric. I do, however, know his wife Renate and brother Greg. It was through them that I felt as if I knew him. A day didn't go by where Renate wouldn't talk about Eric. And when she did her face lit up and her biggest smile appeared. Because of this you could tell that she was in love. Renate is a beautiful person both inside and out and I wish her all the happiness in the world. To the Poelmans, Renate, and anyone who knew Eric... my prayers continue to be with you. Have strength in knowing that Eric died doing what he loved to do... helping people. And have faith in knowing that Eric is now home and you will reunite with him once again! God Bless!

Joshua Allen

July 10, 2005

My name is PFC Joshua Allen. Eric was one of my best friends and my driver. We servied in Iraq together and always tried to make the best of things no matter how bad things got. He would always be their to help me through any problem I had, or make me laough when I needed it the most. I learned a lot from Eric. He tought me how to do my job better, and he tought me how to be a better person. He loved his wife more than anything, and he would never turn his back on a friend in need. The last thing I remember him saying to me was that he was mad that he would not be able to make it to my wedding, but he will be their in spirt and in my heart. To his wife Renate and his family, you will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

I wish to express our deepest sorrow at the loss of SPC Eric Poelman. He was my brother Ron's driver, and a friend. Ron spoke highly of him, and will miss him greatly.

SFC Ronald Barteau

June 10, 2005

I am SPC Eric Poelman's Platoon Sergeant. I was there the day he was taken from us. SPC Poelman died coming to the aid of his fellow Soldiers that were on patrol and had a vehicle disabled. That was the way he was. He was a true friend to all and would do anything to help them. My Soldiers, his friends, would like to say how much we miss him and send our prayers to his loving wife Renate and his wonderful parents. Eric touched our lives in very special ways. He was loved by all and we continue to mourn his loss. May he share eternal rest in God's loving arms.

We will keep your family in our thoughts and prayers.

I remember Eric as a semi-chubby faced kid that I would talk to at various RAHS functions. After not seeing someone for 10 years or so you probably wouldnt remember what they looked like very well or even who they where but when I heard about Eric being killed in the line of duty I knew excactly who they where talking about. Eric was friendly and kind and for him to move on is a great loss to the people of this earth but I am glad to hear of his faith and that he is home now.

I pray that God bless his wife and family and I personally thank him for his ultimate and selfless sacrifice.

My love and prayers go out to the Poelman family. Thank you Poelman for your sacrifice too. As a kid from church I knew as fun. But he grew up to be much much more. A man of honor and a love for his country. He now leaves his name that will always be remembered from generations to come. As someone who gave great sacrifice for the love of his country and the fello Americans.Someday when our heavenly father comes for his children and when we see him we can thank him for the sacrifice he gave to us Americans. Eric you were truely someone who was proud to be an American. And someday we will meet each other again and I will have the honor get to see what a honorable man who showed his love as American and for his country. For you did not die but you live. In a place there is only peace and no talk or worries of war. Till we meet again in that wonderful place.
