Eugene Akaka Obituary

Eugene K.N. Akaka who unexpectedly passed away on November 10th, 2010, was born on June 4th, 1937 in Kaui, Hawaii. He served in the United States Army for 21 years, he retired as Sergeant First Class, where he made his home in Colorado Springs. He was employed by the El Paso County D.O.T for an additional 21 years. Mr. Akaka was a long standing member of the Knights of Columbus. As a person with a can do personality,he took great pride in his accomplishments which are noted by the numerous awards and certifications he acquired throughout his military and civilian life. Gene was a great husband, father and grandfather who loved his family very much! Gene gave us all courage and hope and reminded us how precious life can be. May God find a special place beside him in heaven for our loving husband and father. Eugene is survived by his loving wife of 37 years,Ingeborg Akaka,their daughter Barbara Munoz and son-in-law Mason Caldwell;his eldest daughter,C.Leilani Akaka;son,Eugene Akaka Jr.and wife Nancy;son Stephen L.Akaka and wife Monique.Sisters,Helen (Akaka) and husband Francise Balmores; Maile (Akaka)and husband LelandYagi. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Nathaniel Munoz, Gabriella Munoz, Leilani Florence, Jessica Hudson, Kalei, Kirsten and Kiana Akaka, Justin and Alexis Akaka. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Akaka and Helen (Opana) Akaka, his brothers Samuel Akaka Jr., Raymond Akaka and his sister Theresa (Whitaker) Akaka. We would like to give thanks to University Hospital for their ongoing help and support and SPECIAL thanks to Anne and Kathe, who became a second family to us.
