On August 26th, 2021, Eugene "Gene" T. Mahanay passed away at the age of 92 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Eugene is survived by his wife Shizue of 63 years, his daughters Roxane (John) MacLellan and Lisa (Dutch) Opperman, and 3 grandchildren. Eugene is preceded by his brothers Herbert and Bennett Mahanay, his sister Carroll Wagner, and his father Eugene C. Mahanay and mother Eva Adeline Wilson.
Gene was born on October 29th, 1928 in Kirkwood, Missouri and grew up at Barrett's Station. He served 23 years in the military as a communications technician and retired as a TSGT in the US Air Force in 1974. After settling in Colorado Springs, Gene worked for Mountain Microwave until retirement, climbing to the summit of Almagre Mountain at 12,367 feet to keep the microwave tower functional. Gene enjoyed fishing, reading, tinkering and inventing, and classical music. He volunteered with the El Paso County Democratic Party, and attended Sunnyside Christian Church.
Eugene's memorial service and committal will be held at the Shrine of Remembrance, 1730 E. Fountain Blvd., Colorado Springs, Colorado at 10 am on Friday, September 24th, 2021.
