Eugene Rokita Obituary

Gene Rokita, age 61, a longtime resident of Colorado Springs unexpectedly passed away on the evening of April 29th. He was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut to Anna and Elmer Rokita. He served as a Chaplain’s Assistant in the US Army in Ansbach, Germany. Upon returning to the U.S., he completed a bachelor’s degree in English at Fairfield University before moving to Colorado Springs. Here he reunited with Irmengard Montague, a long time friend from his years abroad in Germany. After falling in love with her, they married in 1975. With this marriage, he welcomed into his life Irmengard’s previous children Harald, Barbara, Suzanna, Mark, Christian, Lisa, Michelle and Jenny. Gene and Irmengard had two daughters, Erin Elizabeth and Katharine Margret. He was a deeply caring, supportive and loving father. Gene was a United States Postal Service Letter Carrier and an active member of the National Association of Letter Carriers union. He was dedicated to and proud of his work. In his free time, he was an avid reader and a Broncos and Cowboys fan. Always personable and with a sense of humor, Gene loved to talk to people and get to know them. He was preceded in death by his father Elmer Rokita, whom he greatly admired. He is survived by Irmengard Rokita, his daughters Erin Senning and Katharine Rokita, his mother Anna Rokita and sister Barbara Collelo. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 4, at The Springs Funeral Services, 3115 E. Platte Ave. A Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 5 at St. Joseph Catholic Church 1830 S. Corona Avenue.

Thank you for being there for my dad. No words can express the love he had for you. At least you two are together again. Love and miss you lots.

Dear Daddy,

I love you and miss you. Thank you for our many fun trips to Disneyland, our many nice visits to hotels on the weekends and the sweet nickname you gave me, Petunia. I'm sorry that you got so sick and that you left us much too soon. Erin and I love you daddy. Please get well soon.

Love,
Kat

Thank you all so much for your kind words and for the wonderful memories you shared. I miss my dad so much. I especially miss the sound of his voice, the sweet way he would always answer the phone when I called with his “hello beautifuls” and “hidiho kiddos,” the great conversations we shared about everything under the sun that had become such an integral part of my life and his wholehearted support of every pursuit in my life. I have so many happy memories of my dad: him teaching me the definitions of words with The Super Hero Dictionary, watching him leave for work early in the morning from my bedroom window and feeling so proud, our adventurous trips to Disneyland, Sunday drives in his gorgeous, bronze Cadillac Deville, our many fun get togethers at Il Vicino after work for a beer and pizza, all his help with my schoolwork and most recently, being walked down the aisle by my dad just days after his retirement from the USPS. One of the last things my dad said to me was “I will always love you and your little sister” and I hope he knows that we will always love him too.

Our father now rests in Evergreen cemetery in Colorado Springs in a beautiful and serene space-- plot 53 on the northeast side. Knowing how much he loved to talk to people, I’m sure he would be happy to share time with anyone he knew.

I love you daddy.

I first met Gene at age 9, and he became my stepfather several years later. My fondest memories of him revolve around sports events, when he and my mother would cheerfully haul the 10 of us children, or some subset thereof, to the various baseball, football, and ice skating events. Gene was pretty happy at that time and so were we.

Gene was the only father that I have ever had. I have lots of fond memories of him: waffel Sundays, family barbecues and the good old post office picnics. My thoughts and prayers are with my family right now and always. I love you all.

This is a very nice obituary. Gene was my step-dad since I was 6, and since I had very little contact with my biological dad, he was my only dad. I have a lot of memories of Gene from my childhood,--going to Disneyland (the beer shirt and hat!), feeding the ducks at prospect lake, going to cave of the winds, skiing and the camper and many more. I very much wish I could be with my family to attend his funeral. I love you all.

I worked with Gene at the Postal Service. He was a sweet, loving man who talked about his family every chance he got. He will be missed. Peace on, Gene and God bless.

Dave, Ella, and I just wanted to send our love and thoughts to Uncle Gene's family. Although we didn't get to spend much time together, his love for his children was so evident. He was hardworking, intelligent, and loved dearly by his parents. We will be praying for him and thinking of him often.
