Forest Porter Obituary

February 3, 1936-August 15, 2006 Beloved husband of Rose Marie, treasured brother, uncle, good friend, poet, author and historian. Born to Ethleen Perry and Forest L. Porter and survived by his wife Rose Marie, sisters: Marie Sloan (Doyle)and Donna Stringer (Herman) and many nieces and nephews. Forest was born at Glockner (now Penrose) Hospital and attended the Woodmen Valley School at Breed Colorado. He roamed the hills with school friends riding his bicycle when the others sometimes went horseback and often hunted with his father and uncles where the Air Force Academy now stands. Forest spent part of his childhood on his parents farm near Marceline, MO, and spoke fondly of swimming in the stock ponds, wandering the same streets as Walt Disney and what a special part of his life it was. His career started while still in high school here in Colorado Springs working at the Alta Vista Hotel. He then moved to Vail where he managed the Holiday Inn and began a 19 year career with Aircoa. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War. His patriotism set a fine example to all, especially children who were drawn to him. An avid traveler Forest enjoyed showing far away places to Rose Marie. They fished Beaver Creek and other Colorado streams, camped in the Arizona desert and hiked the local hills.A working trip as part of the crew on the sailing ship Soren Larsen was a great pleasure. Every trip brought forth his gentle nature loving poetry. His fearless nature did not give way when faced with any dilemma. His sense of humor was steadfast and made knowing him fun.Always ready to shovel a neighbor's walk or help out in any way his friendship was valued by all who knew him. A loving uncle, he enjoyed finding treasures to share with his sisters and nieces and nephews. Forest served as President of The El Paso County Pioneers' Association and continued as an active Board Member and author of the organization's News letter, The Pioneer Courier, starting in 1997 until his death. As president of the Association he led the way to build the Pioneers Monument at 214 South Nevada. Viewing will be at Swan-Law Saturday,August 19, 3:00-6:00 p.m. A special Reading of Forests' Poetry will be at the Pioneers Museum in the District 1 Courtroom,Tuesday, August 22, 5:00-6:30 p.m. Please remember there is metered parking only. Uncle Sonny,

You will be truely missed. Your poetry was the greatest. I knew you for a few short years, not long enough to get get to know how great a man you were. Your humor will be unmatched. The Lord has taken home a great man.

My Baby Brother, I miss our funny conversations, and we talked about our past. Our fun times in Missouri on the farm, I never even got to cook for you at my new house, I even bought checkerboard cake pans at a garage sale, that I planned on baking for you as soon as I figured out my new stove. I still have lemon's in my frig. so I could make your favorite lemon pie. I have lost so many important people in my life, but you, Mom and Dad leave a big hole in my heart that can not be healed. I will think of you every day and wish you were here. Actually the three of us have always been close. Darn, life seems to get shorter all the time. I love you and pray you are with my Bob, Mom & Dad. Also Karon, Lloyd, Midge and Johnny & Buddy. I still see Buddy's big grin and making jokes. Hug all of these for me. Goodnight Dear Brother, I love you from the bottom of my heart. Baby Sister, Donna

Forest,

I went to take our hike today along the familiar trails, the ones you forged long befor we met, you know. I found our usual starting point and headed out confident, but after a wrong turn I was lost and on unfamiliar ground. Sad and terribly lonely, nothing seems the same, I stopped and cried to sooth my soul, the loss is just too deep and ai ache with the pain. Which way to go, left or right, which path do I take? I followed you with confidence you always led the way. Now alone I am not sure of what direction I should go. I paused and took a breath and as I listened to the silence I heard you speak to me. It was as if you stood right with me, I felt it in my heart, and so I took the unknown path, the way we never went. Your message loud and clear

Forest P., now I am on my own.

It is a place I've been befor, unencumbered, no one depending on me. But armed with all you taught me, I start this journey anew, wiser and having been more loved than ever befor.

I carry you forever with me, a part of my eternal soul, our treasured time together, too short. But the hills echo with our laughter, the yell of a caught fish, our songs, our love together and the poems that you wrote.

I miss you Forest Perry, its as if there is no sun, but I will travel forward, for surely that is what you want.

To find my way once again, to succeed on my own, to touch anothers life in a gentle quiet way, to leave things better than I found them, that was your way, " Don't take life so darn seriously, be patient Posey, please". I take these things to my heart, and I'll thank you everyday.

Forest was one of a kind. When working with Forest at AIRCOA, he was a teacher, coach and friend. He always had a great "wit" and could use it to break the stress of the day or a meeting. Rose Marie you found a very special man. Our prays are with you at this time.

Forest shared a great deal of knowledge and experience with me before he left Aircoa. It was wonderful to reconnect with him and have the opportunity to meet Rose when we all got together to celebrate their marriage. After the last time I saw Forest, he sent me a copy of his poetry, which is now even more special to me. You have my condolences.

I worked with Forest at AIRCOA and while his roles as sage and historian were legendary, it was his wit and humor that I enjoyed the most. His entertaining memos are still in my memory... as he will always be.

For 15 years Forest and I worked side by side at AIRCOA. I admired him emmensely and often thought of him as a "man's man." I only heard of our loss last night when another friend from AIRCOA called I I reflected on how many times I thought of visiting Forest and Rose Marie and never got it done! We are so grateful that the two found each other and know that the last few years must have been the happiest of his entire life! Lindsay and I will be down for the reading of poetry Tuesday evening and we hope to see you, Rose Marie.

With love and great affection, Bob & Lindsay.

Forest was a quiet, true and talented individual. His passing is a profound loss, particulary to those who had the privilege to call him their friend. Special memories of Forest will keep him alive for me until I join him.

Shakespeare must have had Forest in mind when he wrote "To thine own self be true" and for those of us who knew him at Aircoa, he will always be fondly remembered for his wit and kindess.
