Forrest Brown Obituary

Dr. Forrest Dean Brown, DDS passed from complications with Lewy body dementia, surrounded by his family, on February 12, 2026.

Dean is remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, friend, and mentor to those in both his personal and professional orbit. A man of humor, intellect, business acumen, and quick wit, he lived fully and deliberately. An avid hunter and angler in the spirit of his relative Zane Grey, he was equally at home in the wilderness or at the head of a lively dinner table. He was a gifted chef, generous host, author, storyteller, and master conversationalist.

Dean and Sandy were married for 62 years, wed in Kansas by Dean's grandmother Rose before moving to Durango in 1969, where Dean established his dental practice and together, they raised their family. Their son, Travis Dean Brown, embraced his father's love of the outdoors, pursuing his own passions in ski and bike racing. Dean retired early from dentistry and often would appreciate all that he enjoyed in his retirement, including watching Travis compete in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Dean proudly served in the United States Navy before building a distinguished career in dentistry. He served as President of the Colorado Dental Association, Rotary President and was an original founding board member of the Durango Hundred Club, supporting and fundraising for first responders in La Plata County. He was also a generous supporter of Durango Trails, even recruiting his daughter-in-law to lead the organization-ensuring that his only grandchild and the love of his life, Zara Rose Brown, would be close to her grandparents. In anticipation of her birth, he built the Zara Rose Garden, a living testament to his devotion.

Dean loved Electra Lake and found great peace, solace, and some of his happiest moments on its waters and along its shores. The family is grateful for two special caregivers, Barbie McCoy and Alisa Arbuckle Sweetwood who ensured he regularly visited his cherished place at the lake.

Stories from those who shared time with Dean will be told for generations. From his first book, I'd Make a Hell of a Wife, to hunting and fishing adventures, to taking scout troops out to learn the art of angling, he left behind both laughter and legacy. He later partnered with his granddaughter to start a fly-fishing venture, ZR Flies-proving that passion, like good stories, is best when shared.

Dean is survived by his wife Sandy; son Travis (loving daughter in law, Mary), granddaughter Zara Rose, plus, friends, cousins and family members.

He will be remembered as generous and magnanimous, who loved deeply and gave freely. His memory is indelible, and his legacy will live on wherever wild waters run and family stories are told.

A celebration of Dean's life will be held at the Summit Church in Durango on March 7, at 10 am.

In lieu of flowers please make donations in Dean's name to The Hundred Club of Durango (https://durango100club.com/ ) or the Summit Church (https://www.summitdurango.org/).

To Sandy, Travis, Mary, Zara our deepest sympathy and condolences to all of you. My name is Susan Spangsberg Vogel and my husband is Kirk Vogel. I am so saddened to hear about Dr. Dean. I got a call from my sister Karen Spangsberg Roberts, as the Browns lived down the street from us in Durango, Co . My sister Karen and I used to babysit their child Travis when he was little. Dr. Dean and Sandy used to give out trident sugar less gum at the holiday time when after babysitting for them. Dr. Brown enjoyed gardening a lot and sometimes, and my mother Shirley Spangsberg would give tips to Dean on what should be planted in the different areas in the flower garden. Dr. Brown was a very kind man and I enjoyed talking to him if he was outside doing flowers or grass when I was out riding my bike on the weekend. Dean had a great smile and he was a fisherman who enjoyed being up at electro-Lake .He was a wonderful man and he will be greatly missed!!!! Sandy you are in our prayers.

Love from your good neighbors The Spangsberg-Vogel Family and Karen Spangsberg Roberts family.

Dr. Brown was my childhood dentist and I recall picking out a toy from his wicker fishing basket in the office after every appointment. He was always kind and friendly, making otherwise anxious visits much easier for a child. Thanks for your compassion, Dr. Brown

Dean was a fantastic mentor to me when I started my dental practice in Durango and a wonderful friend. He helped me in so many ways when I started my practice next to his and invited me to Electra to share his knowledge on fishing as well. One memorable occurance is when I asked him if he would take me and my dad who was visiting from SD fishing. With some hesitation he agreed even though it was a busy time for him. My dad surprised Dean with a large container of walleye cheeks, a delicacy for Dean. From that point on dad was always welcome at the cabin :). I will miss him. Jeff Nelson

My deepest condolences to Sandy and Travis, Mary, and Zara. I have a lot of childhood memories with Dean & Sandy, as well as tagging behind Travis like a puppy when our families went to the lake to fish. My mom worked for Dr. Brown for years, and I can hear his laugh even now and remember how warm and kind he and his family have always been. My thoughts are with you as you mourn, and I send wishes for peace and comfort as you come to terms with this loss.

I was introduced to Dean by Dr. Ken Wilson, oral surgeon, after being referred to Dean by Ken. The first dentist I met recommended that I get several teeth pulled and referred me to Ken and luckily he informed me that he didn't think I should get any teeth pulled and referred me to his personal dentist Dean in 1974.
That started a fantastic friendship with both Dean and Ken.
My deepest heartfelt condolences to Sandy and their extended family.
I missed Dean as my dentist from the moment he retired he was by far the best dentist I have had in my whole life and he saved ALL of my teeth.
He had a great sense of humor and was a highly skilled outdoorsman.
The favorite times I enjoyed with Dean were meeting him at the Solid Muldoon enjoying a few libations and discussing experiences of living in Durango.
The last years I rarely saw him other than bumping into him on the street or at WalMart.
He loved his family with his whole heart and soul and they had a great ride through life.
REST IN PEACE MY FRIEND
GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR EXTENDED FAMILY

Dr. Brown was a friend and mentor. Along with Dr. Mike McCanlies and Dr. John Hayhurst, they inspired and enabled me to forge my own path through the world of dentistry. A trail that I continue to break today after 55 years.
I was blessed to have made crowns for him. He was my personal dentist when I was a young man. I can attest to his greatness as a dentist. I will always be thankful and will never forget Dean Brown.

Sending love to Sandy, Travis, Mary and Zara Rose. I will always treasure the time I spent at Electra Lake with Great Uncle Dean. I loved listening to him tell stories about growing up in Kansas with my grandma. He taught me so much about fly fishing and I will always think of him when I'm on the water. He will be dearly missed.
