Frank Merrill Obituary

Frank Frisbie Merrill Jr. passed peacefully from this earth to join the Lord on January 9, 2015 surrounded by friends after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease and Diabetes.

He was born on December 6, 1931 to Frank F. Merrill Sr. and Susan (Whitbeck) Merrill in Waterbury, Connecticut.

He attended school in Waterbury, and St. Andrews School in Barrington, Rhode Island. Following high school, he attended the Culinary Institute of America, and served as an Army Cook in Korea, and then the Rhode Island Country Club.

He also worked for Corning Glass in Rhode Island. He spent the last 27 years of his full time working career at Teknor Apex International in Pawtucket, Rhode Island working as a Rolling Mill Operator and then 10 years in Quality Control.

Frank met his wife Rusty (Phyllis) at a Singles Square Dance Club in Cranston, Rhode Island, and they married on May 20, 1978.

They came to Colorado on their honeymoon, as Rusty's family was here, and he fell in love with the area, returning each Summer until they moved to Woodland Park in September of 1992.

In 1994, after 8 months of training, Frank and Rusty started their Pet Care business "Fur, Feathers and Fins" serving parts of El Paso, Teller and Park Counties. Rusty is still running the business, just in Woodland Park.

Frank was always involved in his community and church. In Woodland Park, he was a Wrangler with the Chamber of Commerce, Teller County Search and Rescue and the Republican Party. Frank served in many positions in different churches as Council Member, Elder, Head Usher and Head Greeter.

He and Rusty have been Life Members of the Girl Scouts. Frank served as a Troop Organizer, Neighborhood Chairperson, National Council Delegate, and ran the annual Girl Scout Cookie Program in Rhode Island and Teller County for 27 years.

He was active in the Walk to Emmaus serving on Teams for almost 10 years and spent 6 years with the Kairos Prison Ministry program in Canon City.

He was most recently involved in the Jeanne Taylor Parkinson's Support Group in Colorado Springs and the Woodland Park Parkinson's Support Group.

He was an avid stamp collector and enjoyed traveling around the country to various stamp shows.

Frank was most remembered by his never-ending dry sense of humor, even in failing health, and his uncanny ability to remember people's names.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years Rusty of Woodland Park, his son Jay from Jamestown, Rhode Island, his grandson Jim of L.A.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking people to donate to the Colorado Parkinson Foundation, 1155 Kelly Johnson Blvd., Suite #111, Colorado Springs, CO 80920, or to Mountain View United Methodist Church, 1101 Rampart Range Road, Woodland Park, CO 80863.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 1:00 PM at Mountain View United Methodist Church in Woodland Park.
