Frederick Julyan Obituary

Frederick John (Jack) Julyan died in his sleep in the early hours of the morning of 5/24/2013, in his Colorado Springs home, just a few days after celebrating his 86th birthday. He was fond of telling people that he was born on the day Lindberg completed the first solo trans-Atlantic flight and landed in Paris. Jack was born May 21, 1927, in Euclid, Ohio, the second child of his parents, Frederick George Julyan and Irene Martin Julyan, who preceded him in death; as did their first child, Mary Ellen, in her infancy; his sister, Isabelle May (Jill) Julyan Hasselbach; and her husband, James. He is survived by his wife, Caroline A. Padrutt Julyan and four children: Candace Lynn Julyan and her husband, David Hancock; David Scott Julyan and his wife, Pamela; Mark Frederick Julyan and his wife, Cynthia; and F. Ernest Julyan. Also surviving in the immediate family are four grandchildren: Mark's two sons: Travis and Seth; David's two children, Ashley and Matthew; and two great-grandchildren, sons of Seth and his wife, Kate. Additional survivors include nieces, Mary Lou Hasselbach, Susan Hasselbach Jagoditz and their five children; and on Caroline's side, two sisters-in-law, Rose Tietz and Ruth Wagner; two brothers-in-law, Jerome Padrutt and John Wagner; and one deceased brother-in-law, Arthur L. Padrutt; and their 12 children and their progeny Jack served two years in the Army Air Corps in the 40s, then received a BA from Adelbert College, Case Western Reserve, Cleveland, OH. He followed a career in publishing at World Publishing Company in Cleveland, OH, and NY, NY. During this period in his life he learned all aspects of publishing and book manufacturing, served on the editorial staff that produced the 1953 Webster's New World Dictionary of the American Language, College Edition, and discovered among World's unsolicited manuscripts a western novel titled Branded, by A.C. Abbott, which he edited and saw published in 1953. His career then changed course when he enrolled in graduate school at The Ohio State University, where he simultaneously revived the OSU Press and began study for a PhD in Zoology, receiving that degree in 1962. He began his professorial academic career teaching comparative and gross anatomy there and subsequently served as Professor and Chairman of Anatomy first at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (CCOM) and then at the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCOM, now A T Still University) in Missouri, from which he retired in l992. Beloved by all his surviving family and remembered fondly by many of his students and other friends, Jack's presence will be greatly missed, but his spirit will live on in their memories. Arrangements for a wake-type memorial gathering later this summer are in the early planning stage.

My Uncle Jack has always been one of a kind. I remember visits to Cleveland with my Aunt and Uncle and my cousins. Uncle Jack, you are missed and my Aunt Carol has been strong. Love and Blessings.

Mrs. Julyan:
I was a student under Dr. Julyan at KCOM. I remember the time an upper classman "rearranged" the bone boxes in the anatomy lab. At that time the lab was in the old basketball room on the lower level. I discovered the rearrangement and proceeded to correct the problem. I was spotted doing this by another who did not understand what was going on. The next day Dr. Julyan announced the someone had moved the bone boxes.....he looked at me with daggers in his eyes. But then all the boxes were in their proper places and was very kind to me afterwards. I also remember hunting Morel mushrooms on your property with Dr. Manley and his family. I have always loved Dr. Julyan and I am sorrowful to hear of his passing. God bless you and your family.

My favorite Uncle is now at rest and reunited with his mother, father, sister and all others deceased from this world. I will forever miss his sence of humor, as we seemed to share that trait, and forever respect him as a scholar, husband, father, and my Uncle. RIP Uncle Jack.

Carol,
Please accept our heartfelt condolences. Jack was a good friend and helped me a lot in my development as a faculty member, and as a chairperson. I do remember him with fondness and respect.
Sincerely,
